Mechanicville Echoes on Early Hippies and River Pollution
John H. Maloney recalls 1908 Mechanicville hippies and a 1910 hot rod chase on Troy streets that ended with arrests, a runaway in jail, and a horse startled by a car crash. He notes early pollution fears, citing portly editorials on the Hudson and Saratoga Lake. The piece ends with a call to reformers to clean the Hudson first before urging upstate action.
