Soldier Who Came Back From Dead Makes Progress

A young American soldier believed dead after a Vietnam boobytrap wound showed life during embalming surgery near Chu Lai. Jacky A. Bayne, 22, of Fort Mill, S.C., was pronounced dead last July 16 after 45 minutes of resuscitation. His body was sent to a graves registration unit and, several hours later, flickered to life under the embalmer’s knife. Recovered at Walter Reed Hospital, Bayne has steadily improved with blood transfusions and a leg amputation above the knee. Army doctors call the case amazing and say it should not alarm families of wounded soldiers. Bayne’s mother, Bunia Bayne, has stood by him since his arrival in August, noting her son’s belief that the Lord brought him back. The article also notes community fundraising progress in Saratoga, where the United Community Fund has reached 72 percent of its 196K goal with $61,056 raised of $81,860.
