Mechanicville police officer John Gonnelly, 35, shot as he sat in his patrol car on Main Street, is to undergo a brain scan to assess eye and brain injuries. Eight others were wounded. three treated and released, five listed in Leonard Hospital in satisfactory or good condition with names including Beatrice Steen Michael Fusco William Stockwell Kenneth Herrington and John Zullo.
The Wilton prison will receive 50 prisoners this week with 150 total slated, but the Department of Corrections will spread arrivals over three weeks. A spokesman stated the staggered plan is standard procedure for a new facility and not due to local opposition.
A woodworking shop on Plant Road at Route 146 owned by George Fagan burned in a morning fire. Fire crews from Clifton Park Hillcrest and Halfmoon worked from about 4 10 to 7 00 a m. No injuries were reported and the cause was not yet determined, with an overheated wood stove suspected.
Philip J. Brendese of Waterford, a funeral director and Youth Council president, volunteers for the United Way drive to fund local youth programs. Schuylerville Lions Club hosted 4-H members at Old Saratoga Tavern for the annual potato growing project. Each member received 30 pounds of certified potatoes, tended them through summer, and returned the best harvest. Yields ranged from five to 18 bushels, led by Debbie and David Peck with 18. auction followed dinner with prizes for Kathy Landry first, Pam and Shelley Seymour second, and Debbie and David Peck third.
Schuylerville reports Harriet Boex finally meets her long time pen pal Mrs. Douglas Barratt of Ramsgate England after decades of correspondence begun in school. Boex traveled with sisters in law Kathleen Davis of Toledo and LaVerne Boex plus niece Bonnie Bankrud from Green Bay to England Italy Switzerland and France for the two week visit.
In Mechanicville Kennedy Apartments managers defend Kenyon W. Pruyn as a good tenant despite the fatal Saturday sniper attack that killed two and wounded nine at Joyce's Log Cabin Restaurant. Seven units were heavily damaged by bullets and fire. A preliminary hearing for Pruyn was set for Monday. Repairs to the seven uninhabitable units could take four to six weeks.
Election Day dinner runs 5 to 7 p.m. at the Masonic Temple on Hudson Avenue. The Smorgasbord is open to the public. Henry F Lesco Women's Auxiliary meets November 9 to plan the Christmas party on December 4. October votes allocate $25 to BOCES Riverside School Halloween party, $25 to Albany Veterans Hospital Christmas Fund, and $30 to the Veteran's Gift Shop.
Mechanicville Antique show and sale at the middle school on Main Street features over 100 dolls from the 19th century and 35 antique dealers from three states. Event runs 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday with proceeds benefiting the club's scholarship fund.
Rt. Rev. Allen W. Brown, retired Episcopal bishop of Albany, will preach at 10 a.m. and join the monthly healing service at St. Stephen's Church. Pie orders for the Green Sabres Drum Corps fundraiser are taken through Saturday with apple, mincemeat and pumpkin options.
Kenyon W. Pruyn of Mechanicville faces two counts of second degree murder over the death of a police officer. District Attorney David Waite explained first degree murder requires intent to kill a police officer in the line of duty. The case, with evidence and witnesses, will be presented to the Saratoga County grand jury next week.
State pathologist says the 17 year old from Williamstown was strangled and not sexually assaulted. Detectives note body found 25 miles from home after she disappeared October 7 near Williams College library. Police search included hundreds of volunteers and Civil Air Patrol.
