Chinese authorities clarify stance on force for self defense
Secretary remarks last week downplayed a broader use of force by Chiang Kai-shek’s government. Officials said the Republic of China will not initiate war to retake the mainland, though self defense could justify action if cross‑strait hostilities resume. They warned against misinterpretation by overseas Chinese and stressed peaceful aims.
