Sister Marilyn Murray to Lead Mercy High School

RENSSELAER Sister Marilyn Murray, respected principal of St. Joseph's School for eight years, will leave to head Albany's Mercy High School. She expanded the library, added music and physical education, and turned the half day kindergarten into an all day program, boosting enrollments and early literacy.

Telephone rates rise Tuesday in Nassau Berlin and Stephentown

New Taconic Telephone Company rates will take effect June 1 in Nassau Berlin and Stephentown in Rensselaer County. Residential rates increase 50 cents monthly in other towns while Nassau sees higher charges for individual and party lines. Business rates rise across Nassau and nearby towns with varying line options. Exchanges are part of the former Columbia and Rensselaer system.

Ithaca Professor to Be Concert Guest at Columbia High

East Greenbush Columbia High School presents its third spring concert titled Invitation to Summer featuring Dr. James Ode of Ithaca College as guest artist. Garbage fueled steam plants eyed for Empire State Plaza

Rensselaer County garbage could heat the Empire State Plaza in Albany using steam generating boilers. Troy Councilman Steven Dworsky said state and city offices are planning a plan needing about 600 tons daily, with 100 tons allocated to the county. The county joins Troy, Schodack, East and North Greenbush in tentative participation as a county planning fund of 10,800 dollars supports the study. The committee also discussed auxiliary police roles, fire training facility status, shared public works, and joint lobbying. The next meeting is set for June 17 at city hall.

CSEA Strike Looms Over Columbia County Contract Dispute

The Columbia County CSEA threatens a June 7 strike if no new contract is reached. The board approved a salary freeze and summer hours plan, while CSEA calls the move regress. speakers were barred from comment at a so called public hearing. The union seeks state mediation to bridge gaps while the county cites Taylor Law compliance and ongoing negotiations.

The Rensselaer Youth Commission invites private agencies to apply for half funding for youth development and delinquency prevention programs. Nassau youth gets three years for third degree burglary

An 18 year old Nassau man, Donald W. Montagne, was sentenced to a three year maximum in Rensselaer County Court after pleading guilty to third degree attempted burglary for stealing a pocketbook from the Nassau home of Michael Thoma on January 17. Judge Don G. Cholakis lectured him on his pattern of illegal acts since August 1974 and warned he risks wasting his life behind bars.
