New Taconic Telephone Company rates will take effect June 1 in Nassau Berlin and Stephentown in Rensselaer County. Residential rates increase 50 cents monthly in other towns while Nassau sees higher charges for individual and party lines. Garbage fueled steam plants eyed for Empire State Plaza
Rensselaer County garbage could heat the Empire State Plaza in Albany using steam generating boilers. Troy Councilman Steven Dworsky said state and city offices are planning a plan needing about 600 tons daily, with 100 tons allocated to the county. The county joins Troy, Schodack, East and North Greenbush in tentative participation as a county planning fund of 10,800 dollars supports the study. The committee also discussed auxiliary police roles, fire training facility status, shared public works, and joint lobbying. The next meeting is set for June 17 at city hall.

Nassau youth gets three years for third degree burglary
An 18 year old Nassau man, Donald W. Montagne, was sentenced to a three year maximum in Rensselaer County Court after pleading guilty to third degree attempted burglary for stealing a pocketbook from the Nassau home of Michael Thoma on January 17. Judge Don G. Cholakis lectured him on his pattern of illegal acts since August 1974 and warned he risks wasting his life behind bars.
