Primaries in the South Hold Spotlight Across Nation
Four states hold primary elections on Tuesday with Florida and Alabama drawing strongest cross currents. In Florida, Senator Pepper seeks renomination against Smathers, who leaves the House to run. Pepper accuses Smathers of socialism and ties to Roosevelt New Deal policies, while Smathers accuses Pepper of favoring communists and labor Negro coalitions. In Alabama,争 control of the party machinery splits the state between national and state-right factions. Governors and House contests feature prominent names as candidates vie for nominations and party influence. Ohio and Indiana also stage notable races shaping national alignments.
