Parachute origin traced to early inventors and trials
A brief history notes Leonardo da Vinci sketched a parachute in 1514 and Fausto Veranzio described one in 1595. Blanchard first dropped a dog from a balloon with a parachute in 1785, while Garnerin made the earliest live parachute jump in 1797. Modern designs evolved from silk or nylon canopies with shroud lines and ripcords, and pilots use a pilot chute to deploy the main canopy.
