Schuylerville celebrates the 31st commencement at the central school auditorium. The Class of 197 had 131 members with valedictory by Karne Keeley and salutatory by William Clement. In Saratoga County, defense attorney Edward J. McMahon discussed a potential mistrial today citing a Sunday Saratogian report claiming he offered the prosecution 25 years to life for Kenyon "Billy" Pruyn in exchange for dismissal of first degree murder charges. The judge questioned juror exposure to the article as jury selection continued with ten prospective jurors sworn.
Former town Justice Harold Reilly of Wappingers Falls denounces what he calls plea bargaining with the State Police over traffic tickets. The Times Record reports an investigation into ticket fixing by judges, including Clifton Park Justice Richard Lips, with statewide inquiries into more than 250 judges. Reilly recounts a 1976 speeding case involving his friend Bracone and argues reductions to avoid points. Lipps declines comment.
Mechanicville Supervisor Christopher Sgambati announces a bid for a second term. He holds unanimous backing from the Mechanicville Democratic Committee and has chaired the Mechanicville Housing Authority for four terms while active on four county committees. Doctor Joseph A. Zurlo son of Mr and Mrs Zurlo promoted to lieutenant colonel at Tripler Army Medical Center Honolulu Hawaii. A Mechanicville High School honor graduate and West Point dean’s list member, he served with the 82nd Airborne in Vietnam and trained as a surgeon in Hawaii. He joins DeWitt Army Hospital Fort Belvoir Virginia and will live in Mount Vernon with his wife and daughter.
William J. Nelson of Mechanicville pays 150 for speeding 100 for driving while intoxicated and 25 for unsafe tires with license suspended 60 days.
