East Greenbush police investigate two criminal mischief incidents at McDonald’s on Route 9 20 and Vigars Ice Cream Store on Route 9 20. Rocks shattered windows in both cases with no injuries reported. The incidents occurred between Saturday night and Sunday morning around 1 25 a.m. on the McDonald’s call.
John Higgins leads a new business and civic group in Rensselaer to boost city appeal. A meeting is set for 7 30 p m at Rensselaer Junior-Senior High School on Broadway to recruit private citizens and support for a pride in the city poster contest and local revitalization efforts.
The Rensselaer Democratic Committee abandoned Mayor Joseph P. Mink while he attended a Grassingers conference, endorsing ninth ward alderman Donald Hunt by an 18 to 4 vote. Hunt plans to keep his state job, citing salary limits, and the party also backed Dwyer, Beaudin, Lewis, Delaney for city roles and several candidates for council seats.
Alpine Village and East Greenbush officials met in closed session to seek a memorandum of agreement on drainage and fire protection disputes. Attendees included John Modlin of Comprop Equities, architect John Madzula, Robert Angelini and Town Supervisor Michael Van Voris, building inspector Ernest Than, and special attorney Raymond Griffin. The zoning board upheld the permit revocation over missing as built plans, and Than plans to ensure proper fire protection before a new permit is issued as more than half the Horizon View Drive apartments are completed.
East Greenbush Democrats renominate incumbent Supervisor Michael Van Voris for another term. At Monday’s Knights of Columbus meeting they also discussed four open posts town justice councilman seats and town clerk. Official selections are due within a week ahead of the Rensselaer County gathering in Troy. All planned candidates are Democrats.
Schodack Central School District schedules budget vote and two four year board seats at Maple Hill High School on June 15 from 2 to 8 pm. Barbara Gershman challenges George Mesick. George Sousa runs unopposed for the four year seat.
Background notes on the Edgewood Club in East Greenbush reveal its rise from a hot dog stand to a major dine and dance spot on Columbia Turnpike. Performers included Frankie Carle, Art Hicks, Saxie Dowell and the Korn Kobblers, with the fire in March 1941 ending the era and insuring coats for patrons.
