Pope Warns Cold War Could Spark Hot Conflict
Pope John Paul warned that the cold war risks a disastrous hot war and urged a worldwide coalition of good will to address mass misery and unemployment. Speaking to 200 delegates at the International Congress of Social Studies, he called for a just, vital space for countless families and cautioned against social forces that fuel atheism and materialism. Motors and horns from 3,900 Italian motorcyclists saluted him at St. Peter's Basilica.

Berkner urges new State Dept science offices and embassies
Acheson asked Berkner to chart freer scientific information flow and counter travel bans on scientists. The plan calls for a science office in the State Department with a science adviser and three scientists, plus liaison staff. It proposes science desks at major embassies in London, Johannesburg, Rio, and Sydney, with expansion to New Delhi and Cairo and eventual postings in Ottawa, Paris, Berne, Rome, The Hague, Brussels, Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm, and in Germany and Japan. It urges closer ties with U.S. scientific agencies and a NAS committee to advise on foreign policy questions, arguing the United States lags in original ideas and must open channels rather than restrict them. Acheson’s atomic policy remains separate, treating non-secret information normally while keeping truly secret facts out.
