Information program for senior citizens in local towns

Residents aged 60 and over in Berlin and Stephentown can learn about rights and benefits with a single visit or phone call. Tom Vandeau of the Rensselaer County Department for the Aging will discuss problems and solutions, distribute Golden Park Passes, brochures, medical info cards, Aging Trends, area services pamphlets, and bus schedules. He will be at Stephentown Fire Hall on the first Thursday each month noon to 3, and at Berlin Town Hall on the first Tuesday noon to 3.

Hang gliding event set for Mt Rainier Route 2

PETERSBURG The fourth annual eastern New York hang gliding competition will be held at Mt Rainier on Route 2 this weekend. The invitational event for expert gliders is sponsored by Mike McCarron Associates and features a trophy presentation. An All American Family Festival on the Mountain includes a flea market sky diving exhibition and a hot air balloon. HOOSICK FALLS The Hewitt family reunion returns July 30 at Redden's Grove with a covered dish lunch and a revised genealogy book for sale. MECHANICVILLE Jude T. Ryan, son of William D. Colonie Center Undergoes Makeover 77 Remodeling

Colonie Center remodels and adds new stores under Makeover ’77 after marketing study by Siena College projects 28 percent population growth and 40 percent job growth. New shops include Brooks, Casual Corner, The Proving Ground, Jon Steed, Hanover Shoes and Genghis Cookie among others with fashion shows and art exhibits planned August 10–13.

Bishop and nun clash over state abortion funding in Vermont

In Vermont, Human Services Secretary Sister Elizabeth Candon drew fire from Bishop of Burlington for backing state funds to pay for abortions for the needy. The bishop argued such support conflicts with her public stance and questioned her government role. Mechanicville man sentenced after cheese grater assault

A Mechanicville man received 30 days in Saratoga County Jail for resisting arrest with a cheese grater during a 3 a.m. call from Judith Hidley. Officer Salvadore was treated for injuries. another officer narrowly escaped assault. Charges were reduced on the day of sentencing. Harassment and Disorderly Conduct received 5 and 10 days respectively, plus 15 days for Assault in the third degree.
