Rise in Cremations Reflects Space and Cost Pressures
In Troy since 1890 cremations rise to 3494 of 17499 in five years. Oakwood Chapel in Oakwood Cemetery handles most cases with costs around $110 for cremation and higher for full funeral services. Religious leaders from Catholic, Jewish, Protestant groups discuss historical bans and current acceptances, noting land limits and rising costs influence choices.

Appeals Court upholds Schenectady man guilty in sex case
The New York Appellate Division affirmed George Crandall 20 of Schenectady’s June 1974 and August 1975 convictions for first degree sexual abuse and second degree unlawful imprisonment involving a 16 year old girl. The court ruled errors in Crandall’s appeal did not overturn the 1975 verdict and noted Crandall remains serving a seven year maximum term. The case stemmed from sexual acts after he and others forced the girl into a car and a motel in Colonie in 1973.
