Jet makes safe landing after engine fire

A Pan American jetliner from Honolulu with 56 passengers and 11 crew returned to Los Angeles after an engine caught fire over the Pacific. It landed safely at LAX at 11:25 a.m. after extinguishing the fire in the number three engine. The aircraft dumped fuel over the ocean and emergency crews stood by. no injuries were reported.

Riots Hurt Rights Says Sen Brooke in Boston

Sen Edward Brooke of Massachusetts warned riots threaten civil rights progress and said violence is the greatest enemy of the movement. He spoke at Boston on the impact of unrest as Congress debates civil rights measures and accepted the Spingarn Medal from the NAACP at its 58th annual convention.

Two Al Smiths At Air Base

Two Alfred Emanuel Smiths at Scott Air Base, Ill, both 38 and sergeants. Both are New Englanders named for the former New York governor who lost the 1928 presidential race to Herbert Hoover. Born within months of each other in Malden and Natick, Massachusetts, the brothers never met until arriving at the base despite living only 12 miles apart.

Bear Gets Ride On Thruway

A 200-pound bear wandered into Albuquerque's south valley and after a two night stayover was tranquilized and roped. It rode in a box under a tramway used by tourists up the Sandias to about 8,500 feet and was released in a canyon. Forest Service and Game Department personnel led the operation.
