Yanks Drive Wedge Into Gothic Line
American infantrymen Sunday captured Volterra, driving a wedge into the Gothic Line and forcing a setback to German efforts to slow the Fifth Army toward the Arno. Allied forces reported progress along the Italian front with advances near Livorno, Pomaja, and east of Volterra amid heavy resistance and German counterattacks. Northwest of Castelmona and in the Apennines, Allied troops engaged and advanced while German divisions were identified in the line facing the Fifth Army. In other news, obituaries and funeral notices from Jermyn and Hoosick Falls list local residents and survivors, with burial plans announced.
