Pittsfield Board Seeks to Lift Gas Ban and Ration Rules
Donald S Hutchinson, former head of the Pittsfeld War Price and Rationing Board, urges the OPA Springfield district to lift the pleasure driving ban and allow unrestricted use of gasoline within rationing. He argues there are not enough inspectors and enforcement is failing, and notes most motorists observe regulations while a minority drives freely. Hutchinson says the ban is needless since book coupons cover fuel needs and surplus occupational rationing can be managed by local boards. He suggests freeing inspectors to curb black market activity and improve board efficiency, while warning misuse would deplete coupons before renewal dates. A district official says the recommendations are worth passing to higher authority. The piece also notes Donald C Christensen enlisted in the Navy and will begin boot camp at Sampson.
