Haas Explains Race Riots Blames Housing and Transit
Monsignor Francis J. Haas, chairman of the FEPC, said Detroit race riots killing over 25 and injuring hundreds stem from housing, recreation, and public transport issues not Klan or Axis influence. He noted war plants drew 35,000 people since New Year and that FEPC has no jurisdiction over inter-racial hostility, only employment discrimination. Public hearings may follow if negotiations with Detroit employers fail. The FBI sees no direct enemy agent link to the riots, despite Axis propaganda concerns.
