Nation to Keep Colonial Church As Press Shrine
Mount Vernon St Pauls Church in Eastchester, a colonial building linked to press freedom, will become a national historic site. Secretary Ickes announced the plan, noting the church’s 18th century English parish roots and its 1942 dedication as a shrine to freedom of the press and the Bill of Rights. The National Park Service will aid in preservation while ownership stays with the church corporation. The site recalls 1783 actions against John Peter Zenger and his landmark acquittal, seen as a cornerstone of press freedom.

Rudolph Forster, 70, longtime executive clerk at the White House and aide to multiple presidents, was found dead in his Wardman Park Hotel apartment. Police say a heart attack in his sleep caused his death after living alone since his wife’s passing four years earlier. He served from 1897 through 1943, earning an exemption from retirement from FDR, and was known as the White House outer-office buffer who managed correspondence and press conferences. His son Warren Forster, a Washington banker, survives.
