Legality of Proposal Questioned Over Soldier Ballot Plan
Washington debate rages over a proposed federal ballot for servicemen with Taft warning it could trigger legal tailspin. The measure would let uniformed voters write in candidates for President, Senator, and Congressman with no state or local races on the ballot. The House plans an amended states rights bill to speed absentee ballots by air. Stimson objects to prioritizing ballots over mail. Rankin faults the Lucas plan as confusing and notes objections to the direct ballot approach. Senate timing remains fluid with debates on lend lease also looming.
