Southern Saratoga Chamber endorses town hall and projects

The Clifton Park-Halfmoon Area Chamber of Commerce endorsed Halfmoon Town’s plan for a low energy town hall and civic center and the Luther Forest Development Project. It passed a resolution urging the State Commerce Department to use alternatives to tax cuts to attract new businesses. A speaker from the department is to be invited to discuss the Made in New York State Product Promotion Program.

145th New York State Agricultural Society Annual Meeting Highlights

The Albany Century farm families and agricultural journalism awards were announced at the 145th New York State Agricultural Society annual meeting. Keynote Gary Swan from the New York Farm Bureau spoke on land use taxes marketing regulation and federal policy. The 1977 special recognition went to V. A. Nisty Fogg. Bob Buyer of the Buffalo Evening News won first prize for Going Going Gone 50 years as a farmer with Jean Willis Cortland Standard and Mary Ognibene Niagara Falls Gazette taking second prize in their categories.

Catholic Diocese Urges End to B 1 Bomber Production

The Peace and Justice Commission of the Diocese of Albany calls for stopping B 1 bomber production and urges Catholics and others to contact Washington lawmakers. It cites Pope Pius XII era teaching as viewing arms races as dangerous and criminal and notes Rome’s condemnation. The commission, formed in 1976, advises the bishop on social justice and peace matters.

Mechanicville Man Shot In Hand In Thruway Parking Lot

A 20-year-old Mechanicville man, Clifford J. Yandell of 130 River Rd., was shot in the hand by an unknown man who demanded money in a parking area west of the Fultonville Thruway interchange Sunday at about 10 p.m. He was treated and released at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital after driving from Syracuse to General Electric in Schenectady. The bullet passed through his hand and lodged in his vehicle door. The investigation, led by Major N. Lecakes, includes state police Troop G and Thruway detail officers.

Skidmore senior to compete for Irene Ryan Award at Cornell

Skidmore College senior Ann Jamison has been named a nominee for the Irene Ryan Award in the regional competition at Cornell University on Feb. 9. Jamison portrays Meg in Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party staged at Skidmore, with a $500 regional scholarship and trip to Washington, D.C. for the national round, where a $2,000 prize and screen test await the winner. Jamison has previously appeared in Skidmore productions and will perform in Playboy of the Western World in March.

Blood Analysis Day For Nurses In Saratoga Springs

Dr. Thomas Kelpetar of Saratoga Springs will speak on Blood Analysis as a Tool in Cardiac Diagnosis at the ninth annual Heart Teaching Day for Practical Nurses on April 14 at the Holiday Inn in Saratoga Springs. The session titled Ways of Looking at the Heart covers techniques for diagnosing heart conditions. Nurses may call the Heart Association in Hudson Falls at 68 Pearl St to register. a fee applies.

Duplex Destroyed by Fire in Saratoga Springs

A Sunday blaze leveled a four apartment duplex at 8 Allen Dr Saratoga Springs owned by Dan Budt of Schenectady. No injuries reported and occupants listed include Mrs J Cowen Allan Bull Mildred Collyer and Mr and Mrs Carivana. Firefighters arrived after 1 pm fully involving the structure and fought the fire for about two hours and 15 minutes, with the origin suspected in the furnace area.

Airman Killed in Slushy Road Collision Near Saratoga

Airman Phelps Mace Jr., 40, of Brookfield Ohio, living in Porters Corners, died in a head-on crash on slush-covered NY 9P. He was stationed at the 656th Radar Squadron, Ketchums Corners Air Force Station, east of Saratoga Springs.
