Shangri La Carrier Launched At Norfolk Navy Yard
The 27 000 ton aircraft carrier Shangri La was launched at Norfolk with Mrs. Doolittle christening and Hilton in attendance. It joins 14 other first line carriers and will carry over 2 000 crew and more than eighty planes. The ship honors the April 18 1942 raid and builds on the Shangri La name from Roosevelt's joke. Separately, John W Cassels cited Britain’s wartime crackdown on black market activity at a Pittsburg Rotary Club meeting highlighting limited illicit trade to second hand furniture after the London blitz.
