U. S. Bridges Found Unsafe By Engineers
A survey presented to highway directors from 13 states showed 6000 of Ohio's 25000 bridges unsafe for present-day traffic. It would take 500 million dollars to provide adequate bridges for Ohio, while 2000 miles of new roads costing about 60 million dollars per mile are also needed. Ohio's state funds would be exhausted for 10 years solving the highway crisis, Governor Lausche said, who urged a “bible” for road-building and financing and set four questions on heavy trucks' impact for study by a conference committee. States from Indiana to Wisconsin attended or were invited to join in tests.
