Lake Placid to receive 34.95 million for 1980 Olympics

Lake Placid will get 34.95 million dollars to begin building for the 1980 Winter Olympics this spring. The funding was approved by a Senate subcommittee led by Sen. Hollings after a push by Ron MacKenzie and Rev. Bernard Fell, with the plan to reallocate existing accounts and repay when the supplemental budget passes. Construction includes a new 8,000 seat fieldhouse, 90 meter ski jump, and related facilities at Whiteface Mountain and Mt. Van Hoevenberg, with the athlete center to become a youth prison in Ray Brook after the games. The state and Lake Placid committee will cover remaining costs.
