Miners in East German uranium mines under Soviet rule

Berlin dispatch details the coercive system enslaving about 60 000 German workers in the Zwickau Aue uranium complex. Miners endure long journeys, 8 to 10 hour shifts, and brutal conditions with minimal pay and safety. Many are prisoners or coerced laborers, housed in guarded towns with limited contact to families, as large numbers are sent to eastern Siberia for Russia's arsenals. The piece notes quotas, disappearances, and widespread arrest of relatives under “war crimes” and anti democratic” charges. It also includes a legal notice unrelated to mining about Troy housing contracts.
