National Guard Ready but Lacks Equipment and Training

A House Armed Services subcommittee reported that there are enough National Guardsmen to handle riots but equipment and advanced training are inadequate. The panel, led by Rep. F. Edward Hebert, issued a cautious view on the Guard's ability to respond to civil disturbances seen in the past three summers. The assessment contrasts with Treasury remarks that Christmas coin demand can be met without depleting silver coin stocks. Treasury official Robert A. Wallace said the nation is "home free" for holiday coin needs and the stock is sufficient.
