Trainer and Owner Cleared in Horse Doping Case

The United States Harness Association cleared trainer William Pence and owner Frank Knapp of Qualer Prologue of doping allegations tied to a Sept. 2 race at Suratugs Raverway. Officials found no morphine administration and cited a lack of evidence of any stimulant in the horse or its belongings.

Three UPA Faculty Members Win 200 Prize Award

Three members of the faculty at UPA receive the second prize of 200 in the 1846 Hestatanca Welder Manufacturers Association contest for co authored paper on spot welding. The trio, Wendell F. Hess W. D. Doty and W. A. Childs, hold degrees from the Institute and work in welding laboratories. Hess earned a 1925 BRT degree and a 1998 engineering doctorate. Doty graduated in 1942 and has been a research fellow at APL welding lab. Childs also is an Institute graduate with ties to the welding labs. Hess later earned the Lincoln Gold Medal from the American Welding Society and units from the Resist ance Welder Manufacturers Association and the American Iron and Steel Institute.

Optometric Society To Meet Tomorrow

Dr. Charles T. Saks of Syracuse, seven years in glaucoma research, will speak at the Eastern New York Optometric Society annual meeting tomorrow at 7 pm. The event at Howard Johnson's Restaurant Albany includes dinner, a brief business session, and officer elections. President Dr. Van de Water will preside.

Thompson Appointed Deputy in Rensselaer County

Willamt H Thompson of Berlin, a World War II veteran and former member of the 10th Infantry, was appointed deputy sheriff by Sheriff Philip F Craver to fill a vacancy created after the jail break. He replaces Leaton Grant, also of Berlin, with Grant serving as night jailer. The appointment is part of ongoing jail reorganization. no permanent night jailer has been chosen yet.

Supreme Court Upholds FCC License Refusal for WOKO

The Supreme Court in Washington upheld the FCC decision denying WOKO Albany a license renewal. The court found that part of the ownership was concealed, noting Sam Pickard held 24 percent and shifted stock to a brother in law in 1984 while continuing to receive dividends.
