EAST GREENBUSH The Columbia High School Blue Band and the Columbia High School Orchestra will present a holiday concert at the Citizen Genet Middle School auditorium Friday at 8 p.m. Joint directors Al Deresiewski and H. Gerald Cohen lead performances of Froberger Stravinsky Vivaldi Cacavas and Yon Ployhar with Christmas music and a carol sing at the end open to the public.
Albany reports 316 contributions totaling 8138 dollars for a fund supporting the five children of a local businessman.
Rev Father Michael Judge OFM, Brooklyn native and ordained 1961, is appointed assistant to Siena College president Rev Hugh Hines OFM. He will handle vocations work and other duties as part of the college leadership. A fund is created for the Hedderman children with contributions directed to The Robert J Hedderman Sr Memorial Fund. Albany merchants offer a $1000 reward for the Hedderman couple murderers. Hedderman ran a church goods store in Albany.
East Greenbush police report an unknown white male robbed Stewart's Ice Cream Store on Route 4 around 1 a.m. The night manager, Bill Hartzell, said the masked robber forced him to drive to Michael Road, then took over the car before Hartzell alerted state police.
The Mechanicville Elks Lodge 1403 auxiliary plans a Christmas Dinner Dance on December 18 at 7 p.m. at the Park Avenue lodge. Members decorate tonight at 7 p.m. Tickets available tonight, reservations close Saturday, no tickets at the door. Boneless breast of chicken dinner precedes dancing. Plans for the tenth year reunion of Mechanicville High School's Class of 1967 were discussed at a recent meeting. A full-class meeting is scheduled for January to share further details.
Ellenville reports the Saratoga County Farm Bureau finished in the top three among New York countybureaus at the state meeting. Competing with 16 counties, the group earned the Gold Key Award for leadership across a dozen program areas among bureaus with 251 to 40 members.
Saratoga Springs nurse at Wesley Nursing Home honored by the American Cancer Society chapter as Miss Hope 1977. The contest highlights hopeful aspects of cancer care and invites nurses and nursing students to share views on this phase of nursing.
The Lt Fred H Clark American Legion Auxiliary in Mechanicville will hold its Christmas party Monday at 6 30 p.m. in the post rooms. Members should bring a $1 grab bag gift. The Times Record corrects a previously reported date.
Mechanicville gains its first day care center as Assumption Hall Day Center at Assumption Parish Hall earns a state license. Director Joan Nolan notes the privately run program since March under Catholic Family and Community Services of Saratoga County now serves children ages three to six with developmental, family stress, and economic eligibility criteria. The center, staffed by an Early Childhood Teacher and two aides, offers cognitive motor and emotional social development plus family counseling, operating 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays.
Mechanicville police report a major break in at Modern Pharmacy on Central Avenue. A six foot wide hole was smashed in the window, with narcotics and other drugs stolen along with thousands in merchandise. Blood traces and no immediate suspects were noted.
The Albany Symphony Orchestra executive board voted to replace Betsy Kennedy as Manager with Dan Wasserman, pending full board approval. Kennedy was informed of the decision. Wasserman declined comment. Vanguard and Palace Theatre management back the orchestra 100 percent.
East Greenbush Planning Board meets at 7:30 p.m. in Howard Goff Middle School to prepare advisory opinions for two Zoning Board of Appeals variance appeals. Steve Sultan seeks a golf course in an R-2 zone and Dr Insel seeks medical practice continuation and rental space on Columbia Turnpike. The agenda includes Rosen and Michaels ideas from Saturday hours and a discussion on sewer system improvements, priorities, and funding status.
An eight year old from Rensselaer named Dana Biondi won third prize in Cricket Magazine's story contest for ages five to eight with Wulfa and the Wolf. The December issue features winners along with other poems and drawings from the contest.
A Berlin Mountains camp stove fire Monday evening caused heavy smoke and water damage to the structure. Alfred P. Gorman Jr. of Troy was inside but escaped unharmed as Berlin firefighters contained the blaze at 9 30 p m with no injuries reported among responders.
Families for the Future the adoptive and foster parent group will hold its annual holiday siat from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday Dec 11 at St. Clare's Church Hall 1947 Central Ave Colonie. Activities include games for kids a booth of homemade items a craft corner and pinata breaking. An admission charge will apply and the public is invited.
Joseph Powers 17 of 797 Service Road Latham will be inducted into the Order of the Arrow at 7 30 p m Thursday at Community Baptist Church Forts Ferry Road Latham The honors reflect years of service and Powers is the son of Mr and Mrs Mark Powers a student at Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons High School in Schenectady The Powers family is active in scouting at various levels
The Mechanicville Knights of Columbus near completion of their annual New Year’s Eve plans with Carmen Ciccirilli as general chairman. Tickets cover food music drinks noisemakers and breakfast. hot and cold buffet dinner is planned. Limited to 65 couples on a first come basis with Jack Lenihan George Beaver Jim Cavanaugh Ed Dalton and Ed McAvoy on the ticket committee.
A Swine Flu Clinic will be held in Halfmoon Town Hall on December 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. for ages 18 to 64 with no appointment. Dr. Marshall Quandt and public health nurses will administer the vaccine. second doses for high risk children may be given, and adults over 65 or those who missed earlier clinics are welcome.
Mechanicville Lions Club schedules Christmas Party for December 14 at Joyce's Log Cabin Restaurant and an accompanying Ladies Night. Anthony Cocezzo named event chairman with members to be contacted by callers. Dec 28 meeting canceled. Joseph Janniello showcased slides from old Mechanicville postcards and emphasized preserving local history and buildings.
The XYZ Club of the United Methodist Church in Mechanicville will hold a Christmas dinner Thursday at 1 p.m. in the church dining room. The club provides the food and asks each member to make a donation.
