Court dispute over redistricting in New York politics
High Court rejection of redistricting would aid Republican hopes to hold majorities in both houses for 1970. Gov. Rockefeller and Atty. Gen. Lefkowitz challenged the move while Democrats fear a political power grab may hurt re election chances. Current apportionment favors Republicans 33-24 in the Senate and 79-71 in the Assembly, but both sides contest the plan. Federal court orders require new districts by January 31 for the 1970 election.
