Reading program funded for Shenendehowa students

Shenendehowa Central School District receives a 130,368 federal Title I Education Department grant to support the Center for Precision Teaching and Diagnosis. The program, directed by James Cioffi, will diagnose and teach about 300 students in reading language and math this fall with a staff including Joan Mineau Judy Neitzel Kathryn Gerbino Nancy Alguire and others. The district will also pay for a reading specialist.

Mechanicville Middle School Spring Makeover

In Mechanicville the 1912 built middle school undergoes a summer overhaul as 1,100 students leave for vacation. Maintenance staff led by Earl Simpson scrub, paint, and install new floors and walls, aiming for prideful upkeep and future gymnasium use while honoring the Whiz Kids legacy.

Reading program volunteers sought at Clifton Park

Clifton Park Shenendehowa administrators seek volunteers for the elementary reading program RISE started in 1971. Director James Cioffi notes its success with 200 volunteers contributing over 7 000 hours last year. Sign up Sept 14 at Arongen elementary 10 a m to 1 p m.

Drowning Claims Two Youths In Saratoga County

Saratoga County deputies report two drowning deaths in separate incidents. A 15-year-old Tryon School student from Fulton County died while swimming at the Niagara Mohawk picnic area near Stewart's Dam in Hadley. Alson Harrington, 20, of Saratoga Springs drowned when a fishing trip boat overturned in Fish Creek. his body was recovered hours later. Coroner Donald Clark ruled both drownings.

Well-baby clinic planned in Mechanicville

Dr. Benedict Mastrianni with the city announces a well-baby clinic on September 14 at the John Ahern Rescue Squad building on North Central Avenue. Parents may call the mayor's office for an appointment. Eligible residents include infants and preschool children not regularly seen by a physician. Children will receive a physical exam and required immunizations.

West Point Sky Divers to Perform at Labor Day Fair

The Black Knights sky diving team from West Point will appear at the Columbia County Fairgrounds on Labor Day with jumps between 3 and 4 p.m. weather permitting. The Albany Parachutes will stage precision jumping and free fall on Sept. 4. Exhibitions are free attractions at Chatham Fair both days with landing targets in front of the grandstand. The fair runs Sept. 1 through Labor Day.

Oktoberfest planned by Shenendehowa Rotary Club

The Shenendehowa Rotary Club announces the second annual Oktoberfest set for September 16 and 17 from 6 30 p m to 1 a m in a tent at the Clifton Country Mall parking lot. German food beer and dancing with music by the Hofbraw Six are planned. Admission will be charged and the event is open to the public.

Clifton Park Shenendehowa School district invites district residents to join Title I parent advisory councils for the Center for Precision Teaching and Diagnosis. Eligible if they have a child in grades 1 6 or who has been in remedial reading or math in the past three years. Contact James Cioffi.

Symphony names new manager for Albany Symphony Orchestra

Fred Leise. a 27 year old assistant manager of the Buffalo Philharmonic, will become manager of the Albany Symphony Orchestra on Sept 1. Peter Kermani said the selection followed a nationwide search and Leise previously worked with the Baltimore Symphony and studied at the University of Maryland. The Albany Symphony has faced financial pressures but reports higher subscriptions and reduced debt.
