Fred C. Casey Succumbs At 88
Fred C. Casey, lifelong member of St. Mary's parish and Troy civic figure, died at 88. A key Knights of Columbus leader since 1900, he helped secure the K of C home at 55 Third St and served as building contractor for its conversion. He chaired and advised in Catholic Charities, led youth work with the Troy Boys Club for decades, and supported Camp Barker renovations. He held roles at Union National Bank and La Salle Institute, campaigned for St. Vincent's Home funds, and was a Democratic delegate in 1944. Survivors include daughter Helen, son Philip, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Freak Fire Burns Off Jet's Tail Crash Kills 34
A freak chain reaction ignited by hydraulic fluid soaked soundproofing in the Mohawk Airlines BAC N11 tail caused a fire that burned through the tail and took the plane down near Blossburg Pennsylvania. The crash occurred about eight minutes after takeoff from Elmira arriving in Washington. All 34 aboard were killed.

New York AP reports Ralph Morgan, 29, laborer, charged with homicide in the August 4 rape slaying of 94 year old widow Mrs. Alice Sackmann in Park Slope Brooklyn. Detectives Boozer and Corrigan linked Morgan to a burglary attempt on August 17 after the intruder wore a pillowcase over the victim’s head.

Johnson Urges Increase For Social Security Funds
The Johnson administration urged the Senate Finance Committee to approve Social Security benefits 2.3 billion higher than the House vote. Gary Elbert, 25, of Port Washington, named New York State Volunteer Fireman of the Year for rescuing a 5-year-old girl from a January 1986 blaze.
