City Manager Faces Probe Over Pension for Police Chief
Arthur Blessing said he would name wines in a statement defending granting a pension to former Police Chief William J. Brandt. A Grand Jury found Blessing acted hastily and with poor judgment when Brandt was pensioned an hour after retiring. The jury criticized high officials for influence in appointing and retiring a police chief. Blessing claimed Brandt, top of a civil service list, had served 25 years and thus qualified under state pension law. Mayor Samuel Stratton called for Blessing’s resignation. Blessing refused. Separately, St Anthony's Church unit announced a Sept street fair with Nicholas Mariana Jr. as general chairman and plans for concession booths along 4th Street near Slate Street.
