State Education Dept bars Copake-Taconic district from altering budget proposal

The Education Department forbids the Copake Taconic Hills Central School District board from submitting a modified budget proposition at an Aug 16 special meeting. Robert D. Inglis and others sought a $44 000 interscholastic sports budget plus 1105 for band and chorus, opposed to a 44000 sports plan. The petition urged separate consideration of proposals. a June vote defeated the $44 000 sports plan. Acting Commissioner Gordon Mambach ordered presenting the petitioners' first proposition while he reviews board authority to cut sports expenditures if the proposition passes.

Public hearing on riverfront scheduled

A planning study titled The Rensselaer Riverfront a public policy guide will be discussed at a public hearing Aug 17 at 8 p m in Rensselaer Junior-Senior High School. Mayor Joseph P Mink says the study developed from a federal grant is now complete with planning consultants Art Brod and Floyd Barwig presenting findings. A summary report will be available soon and copies may be obtained at the city clerk’s office.

Clearwater festival salutes local woman and sloop group founder

Gail Bowers of Loudonville organized the Albany area sloop group that sponsored the Hudson River event. From a small home meeting to a 25 member core, the group grew through perseverance and community support. They later hosted Pete Seeger as a fundraiser and drew over 1,000 attendees. Bowers moves to Kingston area, leaving a ready-to-join club behind.

Hebrew Academy races to raise funds or face closing

Albany The Hebrew Academy board intensified its fundraising effort to erase a 57000 deficit that could force the school to close and not open in September. About 200 supporters attended the meeting and pledged to recruit donors within three days as a bankruptcy option was considered.

Rensselaer K of C earns fifth Columbian Award

The Rensselaer Council 267 Knights of Columbus received the 1976 Columbian Award for the fifth straight year. The supreme council in New Haven Conn. presents the honor to councils with four major programs in community youth church and council during 1976. Supreme Knight John W. McDevitt noted about 1,600 of roughly 6,000 councils earned the award.

Albany Republican state senate hopeful Arnold Proskin said he would withdraw his name from the Conservative Party line after finding irregularities in nominating petitions. He noted 10 of 153 signatures did not match records and asked the state board of elections to remove him.
