The Mechanicville Civic Center opens daily in August for ping pong pool chess and checkers with tournaments and prizes. Hours run 2 to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday 2 to 11 p.m. Friday and 7 30 to 11 p.m. Saturday. Saturday dances are set for Aug 20 and 27 with country and rock bands.

Victory Mills bhoy hurt in car crash
Daniel Barber, 16, of Evans Street in Victory Mills, was treated for leg injuries and released from Saratoga Springs Hospital after an auto crash at Burgoyne and DeGarmo Roads. He was a passenger in a car driven by William Unger, 34, of Evans Street, when it collided with a car driven by Agnes E. Corrigan, 19, of Schuylerville. Unger received a ticket for failure to yield right of way. The Malta State Police investigated the incident.

Mechanicville High sets Aug 22 fall sports physicals
Mechanicville High School will hold fall sports physicals August 22 at 9 a.m. in the health office by Dr. S. Sgambati. All football cross country golf and girls soccer players must complete exams before first practice. Athletic director Michael Martoze notes varsity and junior varsity football and golf begin practice on August 4.

Saratoga Springs Youth Arrested in False Robbery Report
A 17 year old Saratoga Springs youth was arrested after a false report of an armed robbery at the B P Service Station on South Broadway. Police said the youth may receive youthful offender status and his name will be kept confidential under the law. He was scheduled to appear in Saratoga Springs Court.

Railroad seeks 26 million loan for Hoosac Tunnel work
The Boston & Maine Railroad plans a 26 million dollar federal loan request to repair and improve tracks from Ayer to Mechanicville and the century old Hoosac Tunnel beneath the Berkshires near North Adams. The five mile tunnel sits on the 152 mile Boston to Albany line, a key Northeast link. U.S. Transportation officials have inspected the line as part of the loan process.
