Public Defender Aide Seeks More Help in Ballston Spa

Southern Saratoga County public defender aide says he will resign if the board does not hire another lawyer to handle a rising caseload. The board proposes financial guidelines for defense eligibility and urges state action to require parental payment, while most cases involve defendants aged 16 to 20. Public Defender John Brown says the plan won’t reduce caseload. a third lawyer request is referred to the law and finance committee.

Eleven communities apply for liberty trees in Saratoga County

Mechanicville and ten other communities have officially requested liberty trees for spring planting. Each tree will bear a bronze marker and be supplied by the county bicentennial commission. Planting must occur in approved locations as stated by chairman Fred Heqnemberg.

Committee named for visit by barge

Saratoga County residents were named to coordinate plans with Mechanicville officials for the state bicentennial barge visit. Mechanicville senior wins $4000 scholarship and honors

Mechanicville High School senior Michael DeVito 18 of 410 Grand St. earned a $4000 Frank Gannett Newspaper Carrier Scholarship and Regent’s scholarship honors. He will study pre medicine at Holy Cross College after serving as yearbook business manager and member of band golf and tennis. He is named to Who's Who among American High School Students.

Skidmore teacher not prosecuted in morals case

A Skidmore College instructor accused by a student of sexual abuse will not face prosecution due to insufficient evidence. The district attorney did not release names. the student reported to college officials promptly but waited two weeks to contact police. The case followed a weekend conference on rape at the college.

Sons of Italy branches install officers in Mechanicville

Mechanicville local branches of the Order of the Sons of Italy in America have installed officers for the year. County fair marks bicentennial with full day program

Saratoga County Fair celebrates the county bicentennial on July 28 with fireworks displays special exhibits firefighting contests fashion shows band concerts bike contests horseshoe pitching and bicentennial cakes. The county Bicentennial Commission owns the fairgrounds for the day with free parking. David Sexton chairs hourly programs as communities receive 40 booths in front of the grandstand and Mechanicville Chamber plans a display.

Happy Hearts Club Dinner Dance Set in Schenectady

More than 10 open heart surgery recipients and spouses are to attend the Capital District Happy Hearts Club Dinner Dance on Saturday at the Paramount Lounge 913 Albany St. in Schenectady, according to a club spokesman.
