UPI reports Chrysler Corp posted first quarter profits of 18.2 million, 44 cents a share, down 70 percent from 62.5 million, 1.38, amid an industry wide sales slump. Lynn Townsend warned that pending federal safety standards could curb auto sales after January 1 next year. Sales for the quarter were 1.3 billion, down from 1.4 billion a year earlier.

A private single engine plane crashed into a hilltop in heavy mist near Cortland, killing the pilot identified as Norwood R. Hanson, 43, of Hamden, Connecticut. HVCC expansion plan advances via county board
The Rensselaer County Board of Supervisors approved a $2,747,000 expansion for Hudson Valley Community College, adding a library, classroom laboratory building, and a physical education facility with perimeter roads.
