East Greenbush school bus driver Leslie H Banks and two Goff Middle School students were praised by district official Jack Hedden for their calm behavior during a March 29 collision on Gilligan Road. Five students were treated and released. the car driver, Sam Indelicato, remained in critical condition.
Daniel Malark, 22, had a second degree criminal possession of stolen property charge dismissed after Judge Don G. Cholakis ruled a tape player seized by Officer Robert Muller was illegally obtained and could not be used at trial. The judge said the tape recorder matched a general description and no probable cause linked it to Malark or his brother.
A late afternoon blaze at 1534 First Street forced Mr and Mrs Henry Wilson and their three children to stay with relatives. The home suffered heavy smoke and water damage with no injuries reported. Fire origin undetermined and the rear second floor badly damaged.

John F. McGowan, 49, of Cohoes, was sentenced to seven years in Albany County Jail and four years ten months probation for driving while intoxicated as a felony offender. He was arrested October 29, 1976 on Route 9 in Colonie.
Eight year old Missey Allie of Sanders Lake Road found a reply from President Carter waiting at home after school. Her mother Judy Allie said the letter expressed appreciation and a note that working together would make a better place to live. Missey had written to the President in January sharing thoughts and a wish that her father could be President.
A GOP screening committee in Rensselaer interviews potential candidates for city offices in November. The mayor, nine Common Council seats, and related posts are up for election. Ethel Houser, longtime Fort Craife School principal and 20 year veteran of the Rensselaer city schools, formally retires effective June 30. School Superintendent Joseph Reilly confirms the retirement accepted by the Rensselaer City School Board. Houser lives at 23 Washington Street and plans rest and further study. The board also granted tenure to several teachers and approved routine matters.
Thomas R. Monroe of Saranac Lake has been appointed director of Region 5 of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The region includes Clinton Essex Franklin Fulton Hamilton Saratoga Warren and Washington counties. Monroe 38 native of Olean has served since 1961 and headed a task force for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. He will be paid 29471 dollars as regional director.
