Utica Power Plant Blast Knocks Out City Wide Power

A Niagara Mohawk transformer explosion sparked a major fire at the Utica plant early Saturday, halting electric service to about half of Utica’s 105,000 residents. Fire units battled the blaze for nearly two hours as twenty mail trucks and six transformers were destroyed and a section of the plant collapsed. Officials said damage may exceed 100000 with many high value items likely salvageable. Emergency crews worked through the night to restore power via temporary lines and portable substations.
