Only Tenth Of State Tax Returns Filed
Less than 10 per cent of an expected two million New York State income tax returns have been filed by April 15. Rollin Browne of the Tax Commission notes the volume exceeds last year and about three fourths of filers are expected to owe tax. The governor projects a substantial share of the forecast, aided by the new simplified Form 200. Concerns arise over a 25 per cent reduction not consistently applied and over unincorporated businesses not eligible for that reduction.

State party conventions halted for wartime unity in New York
Governor Dewey approved legislation to abolish state party conventions for 1944 and replace gubernatorial nominations with state party committees for statewide offices. New York will elect two statewide officers this year, with conventions in Albany and New York City to be skipped due to wartime travel costs. The measure affects nominations for U S Senate and Court of Appeals seats currently held by Wage ner and Rippey. The bill also creates a temporary county law codifying commission and extends the 315 mile per hour speed limit to July 1 1945, while enabling care plans for children of deployed service members.
