An able Du Pont chemist develops a synthetic dress body fiber like silk and compares processes to Alice in Wonderland. The invention aims to match or surpass real silk while noting issues of silk worms, cocoons, and hot water. Questioned timing hints at a Du Ponts announcement of synthetic rubber at $20 a ton.
Members of the Christian Pideare held a Monday evening reception at the pre dent of the congregational church for teachers of the Tripoli high grade schools. An entertaining program of music and games was featured with refreshments provided by a committee for about twenty five guests.
Henry Drewis a west town farmer, known for fishing in northern Minnesota, now grows watermelons. He brought in melons weighing 35 to 45 pounds with one 51 1/2 pound giant. Harvey Pries and H J Bunger will verify the claim. The office received a sample described as the finest melon since Alabama 13 years ago.
Caroline Zell nee Staack died at her home on North Main Street Thursday afternoon after several months illness. She was 52 years old and born January 5 1879 near Readlyn. She married Louis Schuld in 1899 and had two daughters Amanda Schroeder and Angela Rhode. Survived by husband Charles Zell two daughters one sister five brothers. Funeral at St Johns Lutheran Church Sunday at 2 pm. Burial in Fremont Cemetery.
Frederika special report of a family gathering at E. E. Henry’s home on Sunday September 6 to celebrate his seventy fifth birthday. Relatives from Fayette Elgin Eagle Grove Nashua and Richfield attended along with Mrs Mary Henry and the Henry couple. Seven birthday cakes were presented to the honored guest.
Mr and Mrs Louis Rohrssen announce the marriage of their daughter Miss Eva Rohrssen to Howard Allen Peyton, both of Chicago. The ceremony occurred at Valparaiso Indiana on Tuesday September 1. Miss Rohrssen is a trained nurse from Jackson Park hospital Chicago. Mr Peyton is a newspaper reporter. They will reside in Chicago.
Mr and Mrs Herman Keding Mrs Louise Fink and son Fred Mr and Mrs L H Fink Mr and Mrs Ernest Haase and sons Orval and Arnold joined about fifty Keding relatives from Dubuque Hawkeye Sumner Waterloo and Tripoli at Cedar River park in Waterloo for a Sunday reunion with a picnic dinner supper and varied entertainment in the afternoon.
Miss Gladys Koch of Tripoli and Alfred W. Gaede of Pine Ridge South Dakota married Tuesday afternoon at the bride’s parents home with Rev. K Koehler officiating. Attendants were Miss Esther Haase and Victor Gaede. The couple will reside at Pine Ridge after a ceremony filled with yellow and nile green decor. The bride is a Tri poli High School graduate and the groom a Gates Business College graduate who recently joined an Indian agency staff at Pine Ridge.

The American Legion Auxiliary held its first post vacation meeting at the Legion hall on Tuesday September 8. With insufficient members no officer elections or other business occurred. Letters from department headquarters were read and discussions held. Hosts Mrs Lee O Peacock Mrs E J Henning and Mrs H L Pries provided refreshments. Another meeting will be scheduled later in September for elections. Watch the paper for date and time.
Drape and Rebholz, local contractors, began work last week on remodeling the old Tripoli Hotel building for F. A. Robinson. The facade will gain brick facing and two large plate glass windows with a center entrance. The project will modernize the building and boost Tripoli's business district, with Robinson occupying half for a jewelry department and the other half for radios, stationery, glassware, sporting goods and shelf hardware.
Waverly Iowa Burton E Sweet announces candidacy in June 1932 Republican primary for Congress from the Third Iowa district. Former representative 1915 1923 outlines issues of bankruptcy farm decline unemployment and need for readjustment and confidence. Incumbent Thomas J B Robinson serves fourth term after Sweet’s retirement.
Chevrolet cars and trucks produced in August reached 54 958 units, up from 51 622 in August 1930, marking the fourth straight month of year over year gains. For the first eight months of 1931 output totals 648 410 cars and trucks with domestic production at 50 985 versus 47 264 a year ago. W S Knudsen says sustained buying power supports the rise and production will continue through September with about 28 000 workers on the payroll.
F C Hildebrandt has completed installing two new furnaces at St Peter's Evangelical church. The work was assisted by John Scheve, the church janitor, marking a significant improvement for the church facilities.

Gordon Irvin Merriott a former Nashua resident died at his home southeast of Austin Minnesota on September 3 after a two year illness from heart trouble. Born April 9 1878 at Frederika Iowa he married Clarice Jones February 18 1909 at Charles City. Survived by widow and two sons Charles Edward and Robert Eugene. preceded in death by son Max Elwyn and his parents. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Brief services were held at Jordan mortuary Austin and at Nashua Methodist Church with interment at Oak Hill cemetery. Numerous relatives and Frederika friends attended and floral tributes were given.
Wm. Hagenbuch sustained shoulder injuries when his car veered into a ditch five miles south of Tripoli after another vehicle from the west failed to stop. The car rolled over, suffering considerable damage, while Hagenbuch was driving north toward Tripoli last Thursday evening around six.
Mr and Mrs John H Zickuhr mark 54 years of marriage with a celebration at their Frederika home. Married September 9 1877 in Milwaukee then Bay View Wisconsin the couple moved to Bremer county in 1886 and have resided in Frederika since. Both enjoy good health for their age.
The annual picnic of county officers and their families was held at the county farm on Labor Day. Attendees included Sheriff F. J. Sager and wife, Chas Bills and family, H. J. Stumme family with sons, Art Kohlman family, W. W. Koch family, W. H. Chapman family, Leonard Miller and John Schwake of Waverly, Frank Lang of Sumner, Henry Sassman of Denver, plus many guests. The event featured a picnic dinner and afternoon entertainment.
The Grinnell Canning Company will finish packing this year’s corn on Thursday. The total pack exceeds 37 000 cases, over 7 000 more than last year, with quality less uniform but better than expected. Local manager Mr Jacobson notes many half filled ears and nubbins in the crop.

J A Kirkpatrick from the county home reports inmates, guided by Steward Herman Harris, had a fine visit to the Waverly county fair last week. He notes top attention from Mr and Mrs Harms and pleasant conditions. Attendees included Mrs Walter Beisner, Mrs Alwin Maurer and daughter Elizabeth Ann and Bertha Estrem. A dance at Jahnke’s Pavilion is planned for Thursday evening September 10 with Katz and his kittens of Rochester providing music.
Lucille Scharnhorst and Walter Voecks were married at St Pauls Lutheran church in Waverly on Thursday evening. Rev. B E H Rausch officiated before about fifty five relatives and friends. The couple plan to reside in the McMeeking flats after a short wedding trip.
Mrs Henry Schroedermeier died Thursday morning at Mercy hospital after weeks of illness due to complications. She leaves two daughters Mrs Carl Ducker of Bremer and Mrs Elsie Brunnemeier, plus Howard, who lived with her. Also survived by her aged mother Mrs Charles Gors. Funeral from Evangelical church Saturday at 1 30 p m Rev Lawrence Soh officiating. burial in Harlington cemetery.
Joe Byrnes a 43 year old vagrant admitted to the state hospital for insane following five bricks thrown through Kerwin clothing store plate glass windows. A charge of malicious destruction filed carries up to five years in prison. Store owner Albert Lindner reports about $300 loss plus glass replacement, no insurance carried.
Friends in Waverly learned Saturday that Marie Lud wig Hursch died in Louisville Kentucky. No cause or details were learned. she had left town in March to join her husband. The body will arrive Tuesday for burial in the Ludwig family lot at Harlington Cemetery.
Saturday morning a collision at the intersection of Second avenue and Third street left both cars owned by Mike Casper and Herbert Weidemann badly damaged. Weidemann said he was too close to Casper to avoid the impact, applied brakes, and struck Casper broadside, taking full blame for the accident.
