Funeral services for Mrs. Ernest Gehrke were held at St. John's Lutheran church with Rev. C J Mardorf officiating. Interment followed in the Lutheran cemetery north of town. Born November 1 1855 in Schoenbeck Germany she came to America at 20 and married Ernest Gehrke June 20 1876. Survivors include her husband children and sixteen grandchildren.

Drenching rains sweep this community with damage
A heavy rain lasting about an hour drenched the community last Thursday afternoon with over an inch of water. Another soaking rain Monday evening brought wind and hail in many areas, though this region saw little wind or hail. Damage occurred in some places while others reported calmer conditions.
Death summons pioneer woman Amelia Bennett at 83
Amelia Bennett 83 a Bremer county pioneer died at her son Berton B near Tripoli after months of illness. Born February 7 1848 in Craw County Pennsylvania she moved west with family in 1857 later living in Independence Fayette Buchanan and Black Hawk counties. She taught school from age 14 and helped found several churches. Survived by three sons Clement Merrill and Berton and a daughter Mrs Schuknecht with four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral Aug 30 at Tripoli Congregational church.

Sumner Bank Closes for Liquidation After 1900 Deaths
Sumner bank founded by S. F. Cass on January 1, 1881, closed its doors on Monday to liquidate. Cass died March 11, 1900. Since then three presidents served. current president is P. A. Smith with Fred Wilharm as cashier and S. A. Munger as assistant cashier.

Johnsons Celebrate 25th Wedding Anniversary at Gillett
Relatives and friends gathered at the Gillett school house then surprised Mr. and Mrs. Frank Johnson at their home to honor their twenty fifth anniversary. Dorothy Heiser and Lawrence Luloff were married at St. Pauls Lutheran church in the city last Tuesday afternoon August 25. Rev FE H Rausch officiated. A reception for 120 guests followed at the bride’s home. The couple's wedding trip will cover Minnesota Nebraska and Wisconsin. The bride is daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Heiser and worked as an operator. The groom is son of Mr and Mrs H C Luloff and works in farming with his family. A hobo named Joseph Byrnes broke five Kerwin Clothing windows Sunday afternoon to obtain food and was jailed. Four large plate glass windows were shattered and fingerprints were sent to authorities. he remains in county jail awaiting action.

Auto Accident Injures Mrs Hawkins in Cedar Rapids
Mrs P W Hawkins wife of Rev J K Hawkins of this city was severely injured in a Cedar Rapids accident last week. The couple traveling to take their daughter to employment were hit by a large truck at speed. The driver was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated and posted $1000 bond. Mrs Hawkins suffered a badly injured back and cuts and bruises, while her husband escaped injury. Their automobile was badly damaged with rear wheels broken and a fender and bumper demolished.

Woman Taken to Independence Hospital for Care
Mrs. Carl Hagenow residing east of here was examined by the board of insane commissioners last week and ordered taken to the hospital at Independence for care and treatment. She had been ill for some time with nervousness and was brought to Mercy hospital for treatment, but her condition required relocation. She was transported to Independence in the Koch ambulance Friday.
