Public Schools Opened Monday in Tripoli
Tripoli public schools opened Monday with the largest enrollment in the history of the school. High school had 90 students. grades added 170. Congestion persists in grades and high school. only the fifth grade has room. The sixth to eighth grades in the auxiliary building hold 66 pupils. Assembly room capacity is 81 but houses 90 or more. Faculty remains the same as last year led by Superintendent A. A. Belknap and Principal Vern Donahoo, with teachers listed for junior high, six through eight, and each grade.

Chas H Smith sold 15 sows at Rath Packing last week under a government pig plan. Seven sows bred days apart were accepted for a bonus, paid 2.10 dollars per hundred plus four dollars per head, while eight were rejected as too fat. He must rely on inspectors and faced payment deductions for the eight not accepted. He also sold an 810 pound boar for 25 cents per hundred, after drayage and fuel costs.

Frederika Pioneer Families Hold Seventh Reunion at Park
The Pioneer Families held their seventh annual reunion at Frederika park on Labor Day. A noon picnic dinner was followed by a business meeting and officer elections with W. H. Ager as president and Hazel Ager as vice president. Ninety-eight attended. the oldest was 97 and the youngest 2 months. Numerous relatives from nearby towns joined the gathering.

Pack of Sweet Corn Nears Finish at Tripoli Plant
The Tripoli Canning Corporation will complete this year’s sweet corn pack on Thursday, with an estimated 34,000 cases. This exceeds last year’s output by 8,000 cases. The corn quality is high and the factory enjoys strong demand with few machinery issues, aided by favorable weather throughout the packing period.

Five Named On Labor Board In Bremer County
Bremer county residents were named by the National Reemployment Service to serve on the Bremer county Reemployment Committee. W S Chapman of Waverly was appointed chairman with C F Ducker and W F McDowell of Waverly and Frank Sumner and Lee O Peacock of Tripoli as committeemen. The panel will promote local job opportunities and act as voluntary placement officers for unemployed residents. It will help prepare lists of qualified workers for Public Works Projects and members serve voluntarily without compensation.

KILLED BY FALLING HIGH LINE POLE NEAR SUMNER
Charles Head a laborer for Central States Electric died when a high line pole toppled while he and crew were repositioning poles on highway 98 east of Sumner Saturday afternoon. His chest was crushed. age about 55. Survived by brother Barley Head of Milford Kansas.

Burial Rites Held For Charles Barbknecht
Charles Barbknecht 65 died at his home in Marshalltown August 3 at 4 15 of apoplexy after a lingering illness. Born April 11 1868 in Racine Wisconsin he came to Iowa as a boy and grew up on a farm north of Old Town. He worked as a wagon maker for Otto and Mueller and C Wilharm. Survived by widow a son Fred and wife and daughters Eunice and Betty of Marshalltown a brother and four sisters. Funeral held at home September 2 then in Fredericksburg Methodist church Rev Bacon Marshalltown. Burial in family lot.

Fire destroys barn on W Poehler farm Readlyn
The third fire in a year on Werner Poehler’s farm east of Readlyn along highway 10 destroyed the barn built last December to replace a prior blaze. The straw pile had burned in November, and the charred ruins were found by the farmer returning home from a dance about 1 a.m. Saturday.

County Plans to Set Up Rock Crusher
County crews began site work on 80 acres southeast of Waverly under County Engineer W S Chap man preparing to install a rock crusher. The county will use the rock to repair roads while land condemnation proceeds northwest of Waverly on the Quibell property. Eight hour shifts at 25 cents per hour with weekly crew changes.

Automobile Dealers Hold Meeting Here
Owners of independent garages and dealers from Bremer county met at the Tripoli opera house to discuss the automobile code in relation to the National Recovery Act. Pioneer Resident Elizabeth Lamb Dies at Home
Pioneer resident Mrs Elizabeth Lamb died Thursday afternoon at her home aged 74. Born in Richland County Ohio on September 6 1838 she moved to the county at age 13 and lived here ever since. Survived by daughter Mrs J G Farris two sons Will Des Moines and Dorr Marshalltown plus six grandchildren twelve great grandchildren and twelve great great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday at Kochs funeral home with Rev H R Temple of the Methodist church officiating burial in Janesville cemetery.

The 86 year old Mrs. Margaret Bryant formerly of this city died in Champlin Minnesota last week. Her nephew Nat P. Ellis brought the remains to this city for burial accompanied by the nephew. She was daughter of the Harriman family early residents here. Her husband Dr. Bryant practiced medicine in Sumner about 40 years ago. She leaves a daughter Mrs. Mabel Seyour and a son Ray both of Champlin. Short services were held at the Kaiser funeral home. Burial followed at Harlington cemetery beside her husband and two children.

Sparks Golf Champion Wayne Sparks son of Dr. and Mrs. F R Sparks won the city golf championship last Friday in a 36 hole match defeating Dr B H Kramer. Sparks opened with 77 then 79 while Kramer shot 78 and 81. Kramer led by one after 27 holes but Sparks rallied as Kramer’s putting faltered.

Miss Phoebe Chittenden left for St Louis to teach for the coming year. Miss Charlotte Mooney, city golf champion, defended her title by posting the low score to win the Cedar Valley tournament in Waverly on August 30. Five towns competed Nashua Greene Clarksville Sumner and Waverly with 27 ladies entering. Mooney opened with a 46 on the first nine and followed with a 47.
