Next Step of Hog Breeding Calls for Aid From Farmers

About 40 Iowa farmers will become active co operators in the next step of breeding vigorous, meaty market hogs. L N Hazel of Iowa State College says experiment station breeders are ready to work with farmers who will carry two breeding lines on their farms for five years. The plan spans three Iowa areas to measure the breeding program's cumulative effect, with emphasis on obtaining 8 to 10 inbred lines per pure breed to improve seed stock purity and cross compatibility. Inbreeding removes undesirable traits and creates distinct families within breeds, promising closer ties between commercial producers and seed stock breeders. There will be broader references to inbred line development across midwest experiment stations and anticipated market benefits.
