Judge M H Kepler sentenced three Bremer county liquor violators on pleas of guilty. Irvin Jolley of Franklin township received 500 dollars and six months in jail with 150 days extra for nonpayment. Everett Nelson of Sumner faced 300 dollars and ninety days in jail with suspended term on good behavior. Wm Kingsley of Waverly was fined 300 dollars with ninety days in jail on nonpayment and a three month driving ban.
The Committee on Reduction of Governmental Expenses for Bremer county named by Senator George Christopher and Representative Wm Koch met in Waverly August 24 1931. Lee O Peacock chaired. Harry H Hagemann named secretary. Members include L C Warneke Herman Stumme Rev A S Watson with ex officio Christopher and Koch. Scheduled meetings will report on drainage district county and school expenses and invite public attendance.
Minister E F Byers reports no Sunday school or church next Sunday. Christian Endeavor meets at 7 45 PM. Ladies Aid scheduled for September 3.
E A Hanff pastor leads Sunday school at 9 00 a m and divine service at 10 00 a m in German Junior choir meets Thursday at 7 pm and senior choir at 8 pm
St Peter s Evangelical schedules Sunday school at 9 and divine service at 10. The ladies aid plans a meeting on September 1st, with details incomplete.
Rev and Mrs E F Byers and sons Delmonte Jack and Daryl Max left Saturday for Winona Lake Indiana for ten days vacation They will attend the international bible study and conference of the Brethren church Mrs Byers district president of the Women's Missionary Society Rev Byers holds three conference offices secretary treasurer of the board of trustees statistician and superintendent of the Young Men's department
A Friday morning blaze destroyed the Buchanans Bakery on Main Street and damaged the adjoining McKeown building in Tripoli. Fire broke out at four o clock in the rear from a pot of hot lard and, despite two fire streams, the bakery and stock were a total loss. The McKeown structure suffered roof and wall damage. insurance covered the bakery property but the Meeltown building had no insurance. Firemen fought the flames overnight with a later flare in debris. It is unclear if the American Savings bank will rebuild on the damaged site.
Rudolph Piegors of Tripoli wins the Victory Cup for highest gallons of Dairy Fly Spray sold in his district. He is a Watkins dealer and top salesman for J.R. Watkins. The award requires at least 500 gallons sold, a threshold he surpassed by a wide margin.
A city party and families left Sunday morning for a pleasure sight seeing trip to northeast Iowa. The group included Mr and Mrs C L McCumber and niece Janola Spencer, Mr and Mrs F A Rebholz and sons Howard and Francis, Mr and Mrs Joe Snelling and daughter Marie, Dorothy Hankner, Mrs Ida Franklin, Miss Ida Snelling and William Schlichting. They visited New Hampton ice cave at Decorah and Picnic in the park, then Spillville to see the Bdly blocks, finishing with a picnic supper at Cresco city park.
Beginning Monday August 31 most Tripoli general merchants will close at 6 30 p m on weekdays with exceptions on Wednesdays and Saturdays Several other businesses will also adjust hours as the change takes effect.
Henry Seehase of southwest Sumner suffered a severe injury when his right hand became caught in a silage cutter gear late Saturday afternoon. The damage required amputation.
Mrs Emma Gillett 82 resident of Sumner died at home on Columbia avenue Monday morning widow of L B Gillett who died in 1929 and daughter of Fremont township pioneers. Survivors include two daughters Mrs J A Smith and Mrs K B Scobey one son Frank Gillett six grandchildren four great grandchildren. Services were held at home Wednesday by Rev Paul Pease and burial in Murphy cemetery with Laurel chapter O E S in charge. Also: car driven by Robert Nauholz veered into ditch on East Main Street at 2 am injuring him with two stitches. windshield and radiator were damaged.
The Bremer county fair opens Tuesday September 1 for four days with night fairs each evening. Livestock in all departments is expected to exceed previous years. Five thousand dollars in premiums is offered for livestock, with a 2500 purse across harness and running races. Free acts, bands, and fireworks are planned nightly.
Descendants of the Joe and Jacob Parson families gathered at Frederika park for their first reunion with attendees from Fargo Nashua New Hampton and Republic among others. A picnic melon feast and lunch followed a noon dinner. The Ackley family also met at Frederika park with a short program and recitations, then picnic dinner ice cream and six oclock lunch.
State University of Iowa Water Laboratory reports two samples from Tripoli water supply on August 13 found satisfactory. Mr and Mrs W H Warner visited Waterloo to hear Rev Victor Oltrogge at Walnut Street Baptist Church then went to Ackley with Herman Warner to hear the Legion band rehearsal and attend church again before returning home.
Waverly rose to second place in the Cedar Valley league by routing the Tripoli Tigers 9 to 0 on Sunday. Welcher, Waverly’s pitcher hitter, struck out 16 while homering in the second. Gambaiani added a first inning homer with a runner aboard as Waverly totaled 9 runs on 15 hits. Tripoli’s Chapin Belknap duo allowed the blows and recorded two strikeouts.
Fire of unknown origin destroyed the pump house on the J. R. Gunsalus farm southwest of Frederika Sunday around noon while the family attended church. Laura Gunsalus and nephews Lurton and Howard Gunsalus reported the blaze and chemical aid from Trilopi Fire Department confined the flames before further damage, drawing a large crowd of neighbors and friends.
Mr. and Mrs. EB C Fink were hosts at a five o'clock Sunday dinner in honor of Mrs Fink whose birthday falls on Wednesday August 26. Guests included H C Frese and family from Waverly EliNor Tietow Spring Grove Minn Otto Schick Fred Buhr Readlyn Sophia Dettmering Westgate Will Dohrman Ernest Dettmering Pauline Lorin Segebarth J J Fink Jr and family Louise Fink L H Fink and Fred Fink of the city.
Erwin H. Kuker of Sumner aged 20 and Ida M. M. Rifenburg of Sumner aged 17. Lawrence W. Luloff of Waverly and Dorotha J. Heiser of Waverly. Albert L. Lynch Jr. of Waverly aged 21 and Esther M. Grawe of Waverly aged 19.
At the home of Mr and Mrs F H Bockhaus a Sunday gathering celebrated the August birthdays of Mrs Bockhaus and her son Walter. Relatives and friends arrived with viands for a birthday supper and spent the afternoon and evening visiting.
H H Bergmann longtime Douglas township farmer died Saturday after months of illness at home. Funeral services were held Monday at 1 30 at the home and 2 at the Lutheran church. He was born Sept 17 1867 in Cook County NL and was 63. Survived by wife a daughter Mrs William Baruth of Waterloo two sons Theodore Readlyn and Ervin Douglas township ten grandchildren and his aged mother. He lived in Waverly briefly before returning to the farm.
Reporter traces weather on a weekend trip from Tripoli to McGregor in Wisconsin and finds more rain in northern Iowa yet severe drought across southeastern Wisconsin. Pastures are barren and corn fired in nearly every field after only one rain in six weeks as the Mississippi reaches its lowest level since 1864 and small streams run dry.
Gold and Silver Wednesday night programs held in Tripoli will continue through September 23 to avoid cooling evening weather. The committee in charge decided outdoor gatherings will be difficult to hold after that date.
Mr and Mrs E A Selck hosted a Sunday dinner and afternoon in observance of Mrs Selck’s birthday which was Saturday August 22 The guests included Mr and Mrs George Boess and son George Jr Mr and Mrs Paul Wendland and daughter LaVerna and Mr and Mrs W C Fergeman
Miss Esther Marie Grawe and Lester Lynch wed at St Pauls Lutheran in the city on Sunday morning August 23. Rev E H Rausch officiated with attendants Della Moehling and Alvin Steiger. The couple planned a two week trip to Lake Okoboji and will reside in Pocahontas Iowa. Lynch to teach manual training and math in local schools. The same night burglars broke into the law offices of M M Kingsley and W H Wehrmacher, rifling desks and safes but taking little of value.
Miss Martha Decker and Henry Hoeper married at Peace Evangelical Church Tuesday August 25 at two oclock Rev Gabler officiated in front of a large gathering. Attendants were Clara Kappmeyer and John Hooper served as best man. A wedding supper followed at the Decker home. The bride is the Decker family daughter of Mr and Mrs Jacob Decker and has lived here most of her life. The couple will live on a groom owned farm near Bremer, matching her parents anniversary.
Elmer W. Norton of Mason City and Lenore Mildred Flege of this city were married Friday evening at the Shelby County Fair in Harlan Iowa. Rev Grant Lewis of the Methodist church performed the ceremony. Both perform an aerial act as part of the Fair attractions, aided by a $50.00 officer offer.
George Hastings, long an active livestock businessman in this city since 1886, has closed his operation, left Waverly for El Paso to visit his daughter Mrs. C. L. Beldon, and plans a winter in Long Beach with another daughter, Miss Jennie Hastings.
Henry Roe ver, son of Mrs. John Roever, married Edith Bolton of Davenport in Davenport Iowa on Monday August 17. The Roever couple will reside in Davenport where he works as a mechanic at Behrens garage. Roberts divorce case dismissed by Judge M H Kepler with costs to Roberts. neither party prevails and no appeal is possible.
Miss Martha Decker was the guest of honor at a shower August 16 hosted by her parents. A second shower for the bride followed August 23 at the groom’s parents’ home. She received many gifts. Waverly gains a new real estate firm Koch & Smith with W. W. Koch and Floyd Smith operating above Kootzbach Dry Goods. About ten lady golfers are noted.
