The second annual Bremer county corn husking contest will be held at Luloff Brothers farm one mile west of Waverly on Primary road No 10 on Monday October 30 beginning at 11:00 a.m. Eight entrants have entered with several more possible. A team contest and merchant‑merchandise premiums will be awarded. Participants must report by 10:00 a.m. at the Luloff Brothers home for rules and final explanations. 4‑H members run a refreshment stand.
A large crowd filled Tripoli Mercantile Co to kick off a fall and winter sale with about 4,000 circulars distributed. Debate prospects at Sumner High show a rising curve with plans for workouts before January state competition and a slate of scheduled matches. John Rockdaschel, 88, dies at his Sumner home after heart disease complications. survivors include widow, two sons Henry and George, three daughters, fourteen grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Mr and Mrs W H Warner hosted a 1 pm dinner and party on Sunday at their home to observe Mrs Warners birthday on Wednesday October 25 Attending were Mr and Mrs Henry Kasemeier and daughter Hulda Mr and Mrs John Kasemeier Sumner Mr and Mrs H H Buhr Mr and Mrs Harry Buhr and son Richard from this place Also present for the evening were Mr and Mrs Ernest Seehase of Buck Creek Entertainment included cards visiting and a hostess lunch to end the day
George Waterman brought in a rare cabbage feature. A single root produced three distinct heads, each growing from three branches beneath the soil. The triple heads lay about eight inches underground, a spectacle the office labeled extraordinary.
E G Michael local merchant and Allen Memorial Hospital Waterloo patient is improving satisfactorily after a hernia operation performed last week Wednesday. Mrs Ida Hankner and brother Walter run his business. Michael had a similar operation about two years ago. Mr and Mrs William Garland and son Albert visited Mr and Mrs William Knopleh near Buck Creek Sunday.

Saturday October 21 marked the birthday of Mrs Will Eichmann. Relatives visited their home west of town on Sunday for afternoon and supper. Guests included Ernest and Virginia Steege, Elmer and Margo Matthias, Denver. William and Helen Hildebrandt. Henry Martens. Franck Eichmann and Florence Readlyn. August Eichmann with Lorin and Janela Ann. Carl Drape and Delores. Cards and visiting preceded a lunch served by the hostess.
Members of the American Legion Auxiliary are urged to pay 1934 membership dues by October 30. Send dues to Mrs. E. C. Claus, unit secretary. The unit has earned a national citation for meeting its quota by Armistice Day for the past three years and aims to repeat the achievement this year.
The Junior Auxiliary of 11 girls organizes a program at the opera house on Friday evening October 27 at 8 o'clock. It features five dialogues and musical numbers. Admission is 5 and 10 cents, with proceeds supporting the 1934 dues for the junior girls. Everyone is urged to attend and support a good cause.
The Misses Minnie and Vada Schwemn returned Sunday evening from Chicago where Minnie had gone Friday from Waterloo and Vada joined her there Saturday. They visited their sister Miss Betty and attended a century of progress event.
The National Farmers Holiday association report shows picketing in three Iowa localities and six in Wisconsin with road blockades near Coun cil Bluffs Oakland and Sioux City. Wisconsin crews halt dairy and produce plants as 2,000 farmers meet at Sioux City and 3,000 at Kankakee pledge support. Des Moines negotiators push for wider cooperation while Minnesota and North Dakota railroads report a wheat shipment drop.
Miss Lucille Etta Heiser and Herman Poppe were married Wednesday afternoon October 18 at the Baptist church with Rev. V C Oltrogge officiating. Attendants included Lois Heiser and Elsie Poppe plus Martin Poppe and Everett Heiser. Edith Green sang and Gertrude Eggleston played organ. A reception for about fifty guests followed at the bride’s parents home. The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs William Heiser and the groom the son of Mr and Mrs August Poppe. After a short wedding trip the couple will reside with the bride’s parents.
Harold L. Arns, 35, died at his sister’s home on Saturday afternoon October 21 from carcinoma. Born near Janesville, he spent most of his life on a nearby farm. He lived with his sister about a year before illness. He belonged to Janesville Masonic Lodge and Order of Eastern Star. Survived by his mother and sisters Mrs. Fred Platte of this city and Mrs. Lynn Briden of Janesville. Funeral services were held at Koch funeral home Monday at 1:30 and at the Methodist church in Janesville at 2:30, burial in Janesville cemetery.
Mrs John Watkins of Nashua and the child of Frank Burgart of Shell Rock were cut and bruised in a Sunday evening crash on highway 218 about three miles north of the city. Burgart’s car struck another slowed for two parked machines, rebounded, and hit the Watkins car. Both vehicles were badly damaged and the injured were taken to Mercy hospital for treatment.
Perry H Tiggemann 37 son of Mr and Mrs George Tiggemann of this city died at his Graceville Minnesota home Monday after a few days illness from pneumonia. His body was brought here Thursday for funeral services at his parents home conducted by Rev A S Watson of Plainfield and burial in Clarksville cemetery. Survived by his widow and four children.
Waverly notes show Mr. and Mrs. A D Bessmer stayed in Davenport visiting son Dr. W G Bessmer and family. Mrs F R Sparks rushed to Topeka after word of sister-in-law Mrs T J Giblin s death with Ed Harden aiding driving. A twelve man group led by C R Thompson seining ponds and streams nearby to rescue hundreds of bull- in the area.
