Waverly special reports the Bremer county corn husking contest will be held Monday October 30 or Tuesday October 31 at an undecided site. Entry contact through the farm bureau at Waverly to secure a suitable field with a minimum of 12 entrants. Defending champ Marshall Johnson of Jackson township returns to defend his title after last year’s win of 1917.8 pounds, with runners up Leo Kramer Sumner 1839.3 pounds and Alfred Mueller West Lafayette 1822.7 pounds.
A petition filed in Bremer county district court seeks to move the trial of S A Munger former Sumner banker from Bremer and Butler counties. The request cites prejudice from newspaper coverage and bank closures. Affidavits from 360 supporters accompany the petition. A companion change petition for Munger partner F J Wilharm lists 234 signers.
A program of plays and songs will be held at Fremont school district No 7 Friday evening October 27. Following the program a lunch will be served. Miss Edna Sell, teacher, and her pupils extend a cordial invitation to the public.
The American Legion Auxiliary units of Bremer county met at the Legion hall on Friday October 13 with about forty present. Waverly Janesville Sumner and Tripoli units were represented. Mrs E C Claus presided and outlined the year’s activities. Mrs Roger Jennings resigned as county chairman. Mrs Jennings had been elected May 15. Mrs Claus was elected county chairman and Mrs Wesley Brodie vice chairman. Plans include a birthday party for veterans at Knoxville hospital on November 13 with fifteen minute programs and about twenty gift boxes wrapped in red white and blue tissue paper.
The Bremer county district court jurors for the November term were drawn in clerk Herman Richmann's office. The term begins November 6 with Judge T A Beardmore presiding. Friends and relatives gathered Friday evening October 13 at Oscar Kries’s home near Fredrika to celebrate his birthday. Attendees included Mr and Mrs H H Bunger, Mr and Mrs Oliver Bunger and son Paul, Mr and Mrs August Eichmann and children Lorin and Janola Ann, Mr and Mrs E C Fink Tripoli, Mr and Mrs Otto Schick and daughter Dolores Mae Readlyn. Progressive 500 and visiting provided entertainment, followed by lunch hosted by the hostess.
Voters in the Tripoli Independent school district approved a 40 000 bond issue by 370 to 205 with one spoiled ballot in a special election. The measure funds land purchase and a new high school building. the board will report to the bonding company and seek a 30 percent government grant.
Reverend August Baetke rector of the Deaconess Motherhouse Milwaukee will give an illustrated lecture in St John s basement Thursday evening at 745 under Luther League auspices. Junior choir and Lutheran girls perform selections under Miss Agnes Lenz piano solo Beverly Rohrssen violin duet Helen Jacobson and Lee Lou Morf with Marie Geffert piano accompaniment etc.
Sunday October 15 marked the birthday of P A Goodenbour south of town. Relatives visited the home including Mr and Mrs A F Eichmann Janola Ann and Lorin of this city. Also present were Mr and Mrs Frank Eichmann and Florence of Readlyn. The evening included cards and a late lunch hosted by the hostess.
John Neuendorf 75, well known Douglas township farmer, died at Mercy hospital Waverly after a lingering illness from dropsy and diabetes. Born August 20, 1858 in Cook County Illinois, he moved to Bremer county as a youth and married Minna Backhaus in 1884. Survived by widow, son Carl, two daughters Mrs. Biermann and Mrs. Luhring, seven grandchildren, and siblings. Funeral at home then St Pauls Siegel Lutheran Church with Rev. Gerlach officiating. Burial in Siegel cemetery beside daughter Emma and son Arthur.
The farm home of Mr and Mrs E A Kleis southeast of town hosted relatives and friends for a Sunday birthday gathering. A 5 o clock cafeteria style supper followed visiting and cards with many participants including A W Kleis Leonard Barth Clarice Joan Whitnabel Leela Arnold Kleis Hadwin Kirchhoff Dilley Piegers Irma Tegtmeier Ida Franklin Marie Snelling and Mrs Ernstina Bartels Tripoli Will Schneider and children Oran.

The Waverly unit of the American Legion will install officers on Monday evening October 23 followed by a social and cards. They invite all Bremer county unit members to attend and enjoy the evening. Anyone needing a ride or with spare seating should call Mrs E C Claus at phone 59.
Mrs Henry Cretzmeyer a long time resident of Waverly died Friday October 13 after a three week heart ailment. The widow of Henry Cretzmeyer she is survived by three sons, five daughters, six grandchildren and several siblings. Funeral services were held Monday morning with a solemn requiem high mass.
Joseph Duggan, born October 25, 1890, died October 16 at Sunny Crest Sanitarium Dubuque after tuberculosis and two operations at Iowa City University Hospital. He worked at Clark's Restaurant and is survived by brother Leo and an aunt in Wisconsin. Funeral at St Mary’s Church Thursday at 9:30 with Rev. T R Collins, burial in St Mary’s Cemetery.
Elva Moehling and M Jay Hillman of Des Moines were married at First Methodist Church Des Moines on October 7 at eight pm. Attendants were Mr and Mrs M S Bird Des Moines. The bride daughter of H E Moehling and Waverly and University of Iowa alumna with dramatics. The groom son of J Hillman Rockford and Iowa State College graduate. They will live in Pocahontas Arkansas where Hillman is a Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel Co consulting engineer.
A crew of eight men led by deputy state game warden R. P. Monpleasure are counting pheasants to help the state fish and game commission decide on opening the county for hunting. The first count east of Janessville logged 104 birds with three more sections remaining, each requiring a 20 mile walk. Butler County finished its count with 530 pheasants.
