A column surveys astronomical progress noting 1700 new variable stars used as space yardsticks, a newly identified twin star with a month-long eclipse, and suns far larger than our own. It muses on the vast scales of the universe and references Professor Shapley.
Miss Leota Meier and Harold Meier were married at St. John's Lutheran church in Maxfield on Sunday afternoon. The double ring ceremony was conducted by Rev. J. G. Baerman at 2:30 with a large gathering of friends present. Pauline Seegers played the wedding march and accompanied the congregational singing. The bride wore white satin with lace trimming, an embroidered veil, and white chrysanthemum flowers in an arm bouquet. Attendants were sister Luella Meier in light blue taffeta and cousin Paula Meier in pink taffeta. The groom's attendants were his brother Waldo Meier and cousin Lorenz Meier, in dark blue suits. A reception at the groom's parents' home followed, with blue pink and white decorations. A 5:00 dinner for about 120 guests featured a large wedding cake. Six cousins helped with serving. The bride, oldest daughter of C. J. and Mrs. Meier of Artesian, has worked in several homes since finishing school. the groom, oldest son of Herman Meier on the east of Artesian, returned to farming after school. The couple plan to live on a farm in Maxfield Township next spring.
Thanksgiving Day marks the opening of the 1934 Christmas seal sale. Junior Auxiliary girls will visit every family with sheets of colorful seals to support the fight against tuberculosis. Three thousand seals have been received by Mrs. N. R. Ambrose for the local American Legion Auxiliary, aiding education, clinics, hospital care, and treatment funded by the Iowa Tuberculosis Association.
Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Kuhrt hosted a birthday party Tuesday evening in honor of Mrs. Kuhrt’s birthday. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Herman Pries and Miss Estella, Mr. and Mrs. August Schellhorn and Miss Viola, Mrs. Mary Pries, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Zander of Siegel, Mr. and Mrs. Will Zander and family, and Mrs. Lena Zander and daughter Luella of Crane Creek. The event featured card games and a luncheon served by the hostess.
Bremer county supervisors in a Wednesday session passed a resolution requiring auto license plates of all direct or work relief recipients to be turned in to the county treasurer to continue aid. No relief will be granted unless plates are surrendered, unless drivers obtain an arrangement with the board. About 75 percent of county work relief workers, some 150 men, may be affected.
Jerry Sullivan sold his implement building to Henry Meier for 250 dollars. Included were a wagon and cutter and a small stock of repair parts. Meier plans to raze the structure and use the lumber to build a hog house and cattle barn in Chickasaw county on the former Wm Carney farm. The 82 by 70 foot building stood 10 feet high at the corners. Wayne Bravener bought the lean-to 10 by 70 feet for 30 dollars.
The Royal Neighbor lodge will hold its regular meeting at the Legion hall Tuesday evening December 4. After the business session an election of officers will be held. A good attendance is anticipated. Hostesses for the evening are Mrs. Nels Debel, Mrs. E. J. Henning and Mrs. E. R. Jones.
Mr and Mrs H J Bunger and son R J Bunger along with Mr and Mrs Herman Keding were entertained at a one o clock dinner Sunday at the Will Smith home in Waterloo.
Eldora Geweke married Elmer Hooper at Siegel Lutheran church with Rev. Gerlach officiating. The bride wore pale blue satin and orange blossom veil, carrying pink and white carnations. Attendants included Evelyn Platte and Ted Hooper. Margaret Brase was ring bearer. A reception followed at the groom’s mother’s home with a five o'clock dinner and pink and blue decorations.
Readlyn Telephone Co held its annual meeting on Saturday November 24 at 1 oclock at the Meyer hall. Elected officers for the coming year are H H Meyer president Rudolph Ludwig vice president Aug F Meyerhoff secretary and treasurer. Directors are Albert Ostrogge Henry Lobeck John Hesse Carl H Kehe and Wm J Peters. Kehe and Peters succeed John Meier and Herman Kuhlman.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl OConnell mourn the death of their infant son born Monday Nov 19 who died that afternoon. A brief service was held at the home and burial was made in the Mentor cemetery. Sympathy is extended to the parents. Mr. and Mrs. A C Sommer and son Robert Waterloo visited Sunday at her father C G Schwein's home, accompanying Mr. and Mrs. Tom Glidewell and Mrs. Lena Sommer who spent the day at the Alvin Sommer home in Leroy township.
Dunkerton high school edged Tripoli 46 to 15 in the first varsity game in the new gym, led by Dean Holdiman with 15 points and Wayne Gaddis with 19. Tripoli, hampered by limited practice, kept pace early before Dunkerton pulled away. In a preliminary, Tripoli junior high beat Dunkerton juniors 12 to 10 in overtime.
Many hunters earned a three bird limit Saturday while others left with none. Open at noon, the season faced scarce birds and mud clogged corn fields. Widespread posting limited access, and farmers noted lower pheasant numbers than in prior open seasons.

Mr and Mrs Harold Bierie and children Maine and Paul visited Sunday dinner with Mr and Mrs Glen Bailey at their home in Oran.
More than 125 attended the Young Peoples Regional Conference at the Congregational church on Sunday. Eighty five were visitors from multiple churches including First Church Plymouth Waterloo and Union Waterloo, Cedar Falls, Dinsdale, Parkersburg, Traer and Tripoli. The program featured divisions on crusading themes, choir singing, a dinner for 109 served by Ladies Aid, and remarks by Rev. Royal Montgomery.
A six person jury in justice court under H. C. Moeller ruled that plaintiff Wm. Harmening of Tripoli and defendant Mrs. Walter Ehlert of Sumner must each cover half of court costs and pay their own counsel after a car collision near Harmening’s property. The incident involved Mrs. Ehlert’s car hitting Harmening’s horse, which had to be shot. Jurors were Frank Hale F C Kuhrt Er C Fink Henry Lau Herman Huegli and H H Bunger. Attorney Murphy represented the defendant, while Attorney Stenzel spoke for the plaintiff.
Cecil Meier heads to Glasgow Montana for an indefinite stay while Mrs. Amanda Blume and son Walter of Fayette visit relatives here. Zenovia Henning marks nephew Douglas Henning’s ninth birthday with family in Sumner. Archie Schrader Estella Mae of Waterloo visit J F Keough family and attend the regional conference. The Wolf family from Waterloo visit Emma Mundtrom family and relatives, sharing Sunday at William Garland’s home.
Miss Gladys Lewis and Maurice Schoof of the city united in marriage at the bride’s home with Rev. V C Otrogge officiating. A wedding supper followed. The bride, employed in Dr L D Jay’s office, and the groom, longtime plumber helper, plan to reside on East Bremer avenue. Also, farmer Gus Diedrich, hospitalized near Mercy, recovering from two ruptured intestines after a horse kick, had been in critical condition but shows improvement.
A. B. Helmecke and Leo Duggan purchased the Vaughn and Raub restaurant and pool hall last Thursday and took possession immediately. This Saturday Dick, father-in-law to Helmecke, bought the store building. Duggan has long been in the restaurant trade while Helmecke leaves plumbing to start the new venture.
Married Thursday Miss Alberta Nace of Strawberry Point and Howard Schofield of Arlington were wed in this city at St. Pauls Lutheran Church by Rev. R. C. Schlueter. Attendants were Miss Vera Gamm and Roland L. Barrack. A dinner and reception followed at the Gamm home. They will reside on a farm near Arlington.
Mrs. W J Empson aged 59 died at her city home Monday noon from pneumonia complicated by heart trouble. Born February 20 1875 north of the city she was the daughter of Chris and Mary Sohle. Her first husband Kiffner died years ago and in 1920 she married Walter J Empson. Leonard H Racker received a cane from Ray C Eggert of Waterloo for his campaign work presented by the late Senator Albert E Cummins. The cane bears a silver band with Racker Eggert Gwynne and the majority figure 377 in Bremer county. Mrs Fred Christopher in Mercy hospital recovering well. Mayme Brechner assisting at Lager & Sweet office. Margaret McAlaghan visiting Cedar Rapids sister Sister Mary Lawrence nursing at Mercy. E A Scharnhorst and wife welcomed a baby boy, Thomas, born at Mercy hospital Sunday November 18. F P Hagemann left for Columbus Ohio to attend a Lutheran church board meeting.
