The Bremer county committee on reducing governmental expenditures holds the third meeting at Sumner High School auditorium Monday at 8 o clock. Rev A W Watson and W W Taylor of Plainfield will report. Taxpayers showed strong interest at earlier Plainfield and Readlyn meetings, and a large crowd is anticipated.
A southwest wind storm hit Frederika Friday around three pm causing extensive damage. Hog houses and barns at multiple farms including McDonald, Golding, French, McGee, Evan, Alcock, and Rewoldt were moved or demolished. Large trees uprooted, electric wires torn down, and windows shattered at several buildings.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Nissen of Worth visit briefly at the home of Mrs Amelia Ambrose Wednesday. Mrs Bertha Lewis Mrs Johnson and Mrs Fred Ambrose went to Goodenbourne Thursday afternoon in Watering friends.
Buck Harris promotes a Friday night boxing and wrestling card at the Tripoli Opera House headlined by a 22 round main event wrestling match between Roland Drewis and Tommy Moore. The undercard includes a six round bout with Kid Heller versus Erwin Judas, Buck Harris versus Hardon Oltroggie, Gus Bull versus Elmer Spier, plus two amateur three round contests. Several new faces join the lineup. local drew crowds last weekend in Frederika where Williams-Buls and Eick-Parsons drew and Drewis defeated Bock in two quick falls.
Frederika Special reports the ladies of the church will hold a bazaar in the church basement Thursday afternoon and evening, December 3. Vendors will offer fancy work, aprons, stamped goods, vegetables, candy and other articles with supper served. Menu includes mashed potatoes and gravy, roast pork, rolls, baked beans, pickles, cranberry salad, pies and coffee.
The Royal Neighbors lodge announces its December meeting at the lodge hall on Tuesday evening December 1. A good attendance is anticipated and refreshments will be served.
Mr and Mrs John Beisner living in the west part of town were surprised Sunday November 22 by a noon visit from church friends. Their home was decorated in orchid and white with tables in the basement, orchid chrysanthemums and a large orchid wedding cake. A luncheon, entertainment including a mock wedding, and a charity gift accompanied the event. Numerous relatives and friends attended, and before departure the couple received an old fashioned chivary and a silver boutonniere each.
A joint Legion and Auxiliary gathering in Sumner drew about 150 county members. The program featured tap dancing by Ethel Kirkland and Billy Monoey, talks by Leslie Lewis and Dr. Hoyt Stonebrook, vocal numbers by Glenn Byers and mixed quartets, a Sumner Auxiliary drill team, and performances by the Legion Drum and Bugle corps, ending with refreshments and dancing.
Mr and Mrs William Bany marked four decades of marriage with a surprise gathering at their southeast town home on Wednesday evening November 18. Relatives and friends joined in cards, conversation, and a late lunch prepared by the ladies. Attendees included the Pichelmans the Prieses the Bieners the Prieses of Waterloo and Cedar Rapids visitors the Lees with family, among others.
Christian B Biggle 74 died at a Waterloo hospital after two days of illness. Survived by widow Clara, four daughters J A Barie, Ross Farrell, Lote Biggle of Waterloo, Paul Biggle Vancouver, Glenn Biggle and Lloyd P Biggle of Waterloo, Paul Biggle Los Angeles. Former merchant here, ran Clark Heileman and Biggle store. Family long known by older residents. left town about 28 years ago for Waterloo.
The 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Buls was celebrated at their South Main Street home with a large gathering on Sunday November 22. An afternoon and 5:30 PM dinner featured a decorated cake. Rev Koehler spoke, the St Peter s Evangelical men's choir performed, and many relatives from Straw berry Point Waverly and local area attended along with gifts of silver.
On Thursday a morning Thanksgiving service is at 10 30. Union Thanksgiving service at Congregational church at 7 30. Sunday marks First Advent with Sunday School at 9 30 and Divine Service at 10 30. Sunday School practice for the Christmas program at 1 30 pm. Ladies Aid Thursday afternoon, Men's choir Friday evening. K Koehler pastor.

Byers announces 11:00 am worship with a sermon on The Question of Life based on James 4 14 Bible school at 10 00 am and Y P S C E at 7:45 pm with topic Where are Missionaries Needed in this Country led by DelMonte Byers A Union Thanksgiving service is planned for Thanksgiving evening at 7 30 with Dr Hackman as speaker A Sunday evening hymn service is set for December 6 with an upbeat program and the church invites the public to attend The church with a welcome.
St John’s Lutheran marks Thanksgiving with services in German and English on Thursday. Morning service at 10:00 a.m. in German, 10:30 a.m. in English, Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. Senior choir rehearses Tuesday 7:30 p.m., junior choir Saturday 7:00 p.m.
The marriage of Arthur Meyer and Selma Kragel took place Thanksgiving day at 3:00 p.m. in St. Paul's church Siegel with Rev. C. G. Gerlach officiating. Attendants were Dorothy Kragel and Albert Kragel from Hampton. A reception and wedding dinner followed at the Meyer home. The couple plan a Chicago area honeymoon and will begin housekeeping at the Conrad Meyer farm by March 1.
A Friday windstorm tore the Carl Ziehe garage roof from Plainfield and hurled it about 250 feet onto Beine grocery and Smith drug store. The main street was blocked, electricity and telephone service disrupted, and total damage estimated at 3500 dollars. Roof destruction and ensuing water damage affected multiple business buildings and cars as crews began immediate rebuilding with steel pilasters planned.
Frederika special reports a surprise birthday party held Saturday evening at the Gordon O Day home northeast of town. About forty relatives, friends, and neighbors attended, with a midnight supper. Attendees included Mr and Mrs B J Mooney and Mr and Mrs C C Clary, plus Rev and Mrs Paul Kehle and children visiting from Ripon, Wisconsin, staying through Thanksgiving.
Mrs H H Nevermann of this city and Charles Hancock of Oeelwein were badly cut as their car skidded on a rainy road four miles west of Walker. The car overturned down a 14 foot embankment. Hancock, 72, required 30 stitches. Nevermann five. Others, including Mrs Zacharias and Violet, suffered minor injuries. Joyce was unhurt.
Raymond Schlichting of Fre mont township and Miss Minnie Knoploh of Buck Creek Sumner township will wed on Thanksgiving day at 2 o'clock at Buck Creek Lutheran church with Rev H Kuhlmann officiating. Attendants include Lor etta Knoploh Elda Schlichting Werner Schlichting and Ernest Knoploh. Flower girls Lorena Zell and Margaret Schlichting. Reception to follow at the bride’s parents home. The couple will reside on the bride’s farm and forego a wedding trip. A surprise shower honoring Miss Knoploh occurred Sunday evening at the Schlichting home.

A Bremer County Independent item notes damages to businesses including a $50 loss for broken poles and wires and a $30 loss for a broken plate glass window in a building on the east side of the street. Smaller windows were broken at the Moore and Boyd stores.
Strong storm damages buildings in the county seat Friday afternoon. Wind damaged the courthouse consultation room window, post office window, and toppled several chimneys. A large tree at M M Kingsley’s yard fell on a house. other trees fell at W H Babcock and BE Sweet. Sheriff Sager’s car was damaged by a roof rafter blown from Smith drug store in Plainfield. Lightning struck Alvin Anhalt’s farm barn, partially saving it with no hay.
Mrs Dora Babcock and Hans Hohnsbehn of this city called to Waterloo last week for the critical illness and death of sister Mrs Anna McDermott 61 born Hohnsbehn family came to United States at age two from Illinois to Waverly in 1877 where Mr Hohnsbehn started the first butter tub factory she married Matt McDermott October 12 1808 at Waverly Mr McDermott died January 4 1924 she leaves son Neil and siblings funeral from St Josephs church Waterloo Tuesday November 24 burial Calvary cemetery many old friends plan to attend
Edna Schemmel and Emil Roloff united in marriage at St. Pauls Lutheran church on Wednesday evening November 15. Rev E H Rausch officiated. A reception and dinner followed at the bride’s sister Mrs J P Kroger’s home. The bride, daughter of Mr and Mrs August Schemmel of Alvord Iowa, is a Wartburg graduate who worked as an office assistant for Dr M N Gernsey. The groom, son of Mr and Mrs Ernest Roloff, is a Wartburg graduate who helped on the family farm. They will live with the groom’s parents until spring, then establish a home.
Surprised on wedding anniversary Mr and Mrs Chris Stehn were the honored guests at a surprise party at their home last Thursday. Relatives and friends attended including Mr and Mrs Carl Ducker Mr and Mrs Fred Richmann Mr and Mrs Ernest Thoms Waverly Mrs Johanna Jungblut Mrs Emma Redemann and Ernest Stehn of Tripoli Mr and Mrs Fred Lohmann Esther Lohman Mr and Mrs August Frederick Mr and Mrs Ernest Redies and Mr and Mrs Henry Redies.
Last Friday evening about seven, thieves entered the Gaffney home through an unlocked back door and took clothing belonging to Mrs Gaffney. Soon after, the Brodie residence was entered and similar items including silk hose underwear and shoes were stolen. Miss Marie Rothe reported theft of silverware laces and other items from her home, with ongoing missing articles.
The Legion Carnival held Thursday and Friday of last week drew strong patronage from the community. Organizers praise the hall’s facilities and the efforts of all volunteers, noting the event’s success and the support shown by attendees.
