Bremer County Hires Richard Gish as County Engineer
Bremer County Board of Supervisors hired Richard W. Gish, formerly assistant engineer in Chickasaw County at New Hampton, to become Bremer County engineer effective June 1. The appointment comes after a contentious afternoon in which Oscar Hahn, claiming to remain engineer, was dominated by board members and told to leave. Hahn argued the actions were illegal. The seven month contract pays about 460 dollars monthly, aligning with Hahn’s previous salary. A prior resolution declared Hahn no longer Bremer County engineer and disavowed his authority since April 30 1952.

Eighty six attended the mother daughter chicken dinner at the Congregational church Sunday evening served by the Men’s Fellowship. Mrs George Koons acted as toastmistress and welcomed the daughters. Betty Snelling gave the daughter’s response. Patsy Chapin sang a solo. Dr Louis Bultena of Iowa State Teachers College Cedar Falls entertained with slight of hand acts. Corsages were awarded to the oldest grandmother Mrs W D Chapin and the youngest grandmother Mrs William Hagedorn of Frederika. Barbara Schmidt was the youngest daughter present and Ruth Ellen Asmus the daughter from farthest distance.

Sumner special reports funeral services for William H Kirchhoff who died at his home Thursday May 22 1952 from a stroke. Services were held May 26 at Berg funeral home and St John’s American Lutheran Church with Rev Arthur Langholz officiating. Burial in Lutheran cemetery. Born December 5 1877 he married Anna Linden May 19 1903. farmed until 1947 then moved to Sumner. Survived by wife two sons Arthur Buckingham Walter Woodward three daughters Francis Madden Waterloo Leonard William Willgram Sumner and William Wolfgram Waucoma 17 great grandchildren 23 grandchildren four brothers Carl Dietrich Tripoli Henry Herman Sumner. Preceded by parents and one brother.

At the Sumner Legion hall on Monday evening at 8 00 p m several Tripoli boys received awards. Rev Edward Schneider chair from Waverly presided and J D Armstrong of the Wapsi Pinicon area council presented three year awards and tree planting honors at Camp Ingawanis. Second class awards went to Harlan Bremer Jim Klemp and Carl Blaufuss. Three year program awards were given to Troop 103 Janesville Pack 86 Plainfield and Troop 45 Sumner.

Funeral Services Held Saturday for Herman Schneider
Funeral services for Herman Schneider were conducted Saturday afternoon May 24 at Berg funeral home and at St John’s Lutheran Buck Creek with Rev Beyer presiding. A lifelong resident of Buck Creek later Sumner he married Dorothea Nieman on February 21 1907. Rites Held Sunday At Siegel for Mrs. Carl Westendorf
Funeral services were held at St. John's Evangelical and Reformed in Siegel for Frieda Kammeyer Westendorf 46 wife of Carl Westendorf of Oran and mother of Eldon and Marlys. She died May 21 at Allen Memorial Hospital Waterloo after a lingering illness. Interment followed at St. John's cemetery. Survivors include husband Carl, children Eldon and Marlys, her parents Carl and Mrs Kammeyer of Oran, one brother Arthur of Oran, two sisters Mrs Herman Miller Readlyn and Mrs Arthur Eick Waverly, and grandmother Mrs Lena Schellhorn Tripoli.
