Des Moines reports the U S Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal from Mitchell county farmers challenging Iowa's bovine tuberculosis testing law. The ruling ends legal obstacles and triggers stay dissolutions in multiple counties as testing proceeds statewide with Dr Peter Malcolm promising rapid completion.
Earl Cochran aged 28 was crushed by an enraged bull on a farm seven and a half miles northeast of New Hampton. His brother Douglas, 30, was leading the bull to water when it broke away and charged Earl. Earl leaped a fence but was trapped by the top wire as the bull struck. He died within minutes. their father is dead and they live with their mother on the farm.
All business houses will be closed between 1 and 4 pm Saturday during Memorial Day services at the opera house and cemetery. The program at the opera house will commence at 1:80.
Tripoli Tigers defeated Dunkerton 8 to 6 on local grounds last Sunday. Dunkerton pitchers Lehr and Shell Split 3 strikeouts. Krueger pitched all nine for Tripoli with seven strikeouts. Twelve errors were charged, seven to Meyers and Beisner for Tripoli and five to Dunkerton. Individual highlights include Guyer a Dunkerton batter with a homer and two base hits for Sommers, Holmes, and Krueger roaming the mound.
Mrs. Earl Wade of Charles City dies at University Hospital Iowa City after May 15 stay with husband and two young children. L P Winks and brother travel to Chicago for National Association of Produce Dealers board meeting. return midweek. Memorial events include poppy day proceeds and Legion activities with plans for future poppies.
A Sunday evening surprise party honored Mr and Mrs Alvin Sommer at Spring Fountain. Guests included Mr and Mrs John Struck and daughters, Mr and Mrs Charles Thompson, Mr and Mrs John Lawton and Miss Mary Page, Mr and Mrs Emil Steege and daughter Geraldine, Mr and Mrs Albert Reich and sons, Mr and Mrs Elmer Kneadler, Mr and Mrs Henry Meyer and family, Mr and Mrs Ben Moeller and family, Mrs Edna Ganske and daughter Henrietta and Arlene Bodermann.
American Legion Auxiliary members urge everyone to buy and wear a poppy in memory of those who served and did not return. A delegation will sell poppies on the street during several evenings this week to ensure broad access.

Mrs George A Weidler 51 died at home east of town Sunday May 17 heart trouble after two weeks illness. Born April 3 1880 in Germany she came to the U S with family. Married Geo A Weidler March 6 1900 seven children two daughters predeceased. Survived by husband three sons Edwin Read ing Elmer Raymond at home three daughters Anna Des Moines Alma Spier Ionia Lillian Myir Northwood five brothers two sisters three grandchildren. Funeral May 19 held at farm home east of Tripoli then Spring Fountain Lutheran church Rev C Born officiating burial Spring Fountain cemetery.
Tripoli will host its first open air band concert Saturday May 30 led by bandmaster Myrick. The nine month rehearsal period yields a larger ensemble and robust season through early September with Prof Myrick conducting in person. Earlier, a large crowd attended last week’s Gold and Silver Wednesday despite cold weather, with parking tight downtown. Future Wednesdays feature the high school senior orchestra and a black faced comedy act as planned entertainment.
Members of the American Legion Auxiliary held a farewell party at the Legion hall for charter member Mrs. E. H. Martin. She received a keepsake gift as thanks for her service, with music, singing and contests as entertainment. Refreshments were served by Mrs. B. F. Morf, Mrs. E. H. Kuker and Mrs. F. W. Diekman. Mrs. Martin plans to move to Oklahoma City to join her husband. their son and family also reside there.
Mr and Mrs Fred Shellhorn celebrated their twenty fifth wedding anniversary at home on Sunday. Guests joined for supper and an afternoon of visiting. Gifford's carnival, with about twenty concessions and several riding devices, will arrive in Tripoli Monday, June 1, for a weeklong stay. Brought by the Bockhaus-Bartels American Legion post, the event will occupy vacant lots behind the Spahn & Rose Lumber yard. Attractions include Swings, Merry-Mix-Up, Ferris Wheel, Miniature Railroad, Tangler, athletic acts, and wild west shows.
The White Star Billiard Parlor, owned for six months by G. J. Bunger, was sold last Friday to Henry Matthie sen. Matthiesen took possession Saturday. The consideration was not stated. Earl, youngest son of Mr. Matthiesen, will help run the business.
Petitions for a $300,000 road bond election circulated in the eastern part of the county were withdrawn amid strong opposition. Over six hundred signatures were gathered before the call to submit the bond proposal to voters from the Denver corner north to the Chickasaw county line. Proponents deemed an election useless after the opposition intensified.
Legion Auxiliary members are urged to gather at the Legion hall Friday afternoon to craft memorial wreaths for graves of soldiers. The work, organized for Saturday decoration, invites any interested persons to join in this service project.
Henry H. Sweet ninety of Bremer county Iowa died May 10 at his daughter’s home in Kansas City. A longtime Delphos resident and later Delphos area mill partner, he served in the Ninth Illinois cavalry and U S veteran volunteers. Survived by six children, seven grandchildren, one great grandchild, he was buried beside his wife in Delphos cemetery after services in Kansas City and Delphos.
Fremont Special reports relatives friends and neighbors gathered at the A. D. Chapin home Sunday to honor Mr. and Mrs. Myron Chapin on their ninth wedding anniversary. A picnic lunch was shared on the lawn and attendees enjoyed visiting and a game of ball.
Thirteen eighth grade graduates were hosted to a May Day breakfast at seven o'clock on Friday morning at the home of Mrs H J Frese. Superintend ent and Mrs A A Belknap Mr and Mrs L W Van derlinden Miss Agnes Lenz and Miss Beryl McCreery attended. Mrs Frese and Mrs F A Rebholz were hostesses. The meal had three courses. A miniature May Pole formed the center of the dining table with decorations in apricot and green to match the class colors.
Mr and Mrs F H Bockhaus and their sons Walter and Wesley traveled to Readlyn on Sunday to visit Mr and Mrs Charley Everding at their home.
Nine year old Herbert Soldwisch suffered serious leg injuries when a J and M ice cream truck sideswiped the wagon he rode in near the W J Miller farm on No 218. He was taken to Mercy hospital and treated. one horse in the wagon was killed. The incident was witnessed by locals. no bones were broken. The page notes the football team went 6-1-1 and the track team showed strength in meets.
Waverly friends of Mrs Mary Hoyt formerly of this city now residing in Davenport were advised of her death at her Davenport home. She was 84 and survived by four daughters with her husband already deceased.
While repairing his automobile last Tuesday afternoon, Robert Omelik severely lacerated his hand when the motor started unexpectedly and his hand was caught in the bearings. He received medical care and will be unable to use his hand for some time.
Farmers near Waverly have purchased a fine new fire truck that will arrive in a few days. The local unit could not use the city truck for country fires while it was away, so the new vehicle will greatly aid in fighting farm fires.
The Bremer county jail is without an inmate after a winter of boarders. A large carnival has pitched tents at the fair grounds for a week. Ray Scott went to Clarksville last Friday for his brother William Scott’s illness and death from lockjaw and paralysis. Robert Beebe, 13, won a fish-catching prize with a seven pound six and a half ounce catfish above the Cedar River. George Moulds opened a new service station north of the Waverly station, to be run by W J Wren. Miss Helen Wright returned to Waverly after a year in Europe. Mrs. Perry Broadie of Denver visits her mother until after Decoration Day. Albert Beebe and Dwight Beebe of Detroit visit Grace Tofte and relatives. Elizabeth Lamb, 92, seriously ill after a stroke. Marie Leary enjoys two weeks’ vacation at her father W R Leary’s home. W J Dempsey and wife visited their aunt Mrs John Dempsey in Belmond. the Dempsey family once lived here. Local businesses close from one to four on Memorial Day. Dr W A Rohlf addressed a Red Cross nursing class of seventy in Rock Rapids. Four were confirmed at St John’s: Harry Aschbrenner, Laverne Kumming, Ruth Groening, Dorothy Heine. Mr and Mrs Alex Mooney and daughter Virla of Oelwein visited.
