Professor Piccard and assistant Charles Kipfer ride a balloon attached diving bell to 52 500 feet marker through upper air. They survive a near suffocation on a perilous ascent. The ascent reveals near vacuum temperatures and a dust free jet black sky.
Brayton Savings Bank lost 5500 from vault and 340 from till during a noon robbery. Simultaneously a bulk oil station fire drew a crowd, with two strangers and a brown Ohio-licensed coupe seen in town. No one witnessed the theft. investigators collected fingerprints and the bank is insured.
Rev. F. Schedtler, retired Lutheran minister from Sumner, suffered severe bruises when his car overturned one mile west of Sumner on Thursday afternoon after leaving Wartburg College graduation exercises at Waverly. He was found unconscious beside the badly damaged vehicle by Henry Tietje.

Gifford's shows arrive in Tripoli from Grundy Center and set up on vacant lots two blocks east of the lumber yards. The carnival opens Monday night with a ferris wheel tangler merry mix up miniature railroad and about fifteen concessions. American Legion post sponsors the event with a share of profits, operating nightly through Saturday.
Chris Segebarth received a surprise 66th birthday party on Wednesday May 27 at the home of Mr and Mrs A F Eichmann. Guests included his children and grandchildren from Readlyn Kling, Bremer Nashua and nearby areas plus his nephew August Eichmann. He remains active, living with the Eichmann family and enjoying life with local retired farmers.

Sumner Special Descendants of Peter Messerer who came from Bavaria in 1854 held a reunion Sunday at the Evangelical church. About 100 Messerer relatives attended the dinner with numerous out of town guests including Emma Ritchie and son of Waverly Everett Ritchie and family of Waterloo Fred Lehmkuhl Independence Arthur Rieck and daughters West Union M E Norton and two sons Matt Glaeges and family Minneapolis O E Reep and their children Buffalo Lake Minn Harvey Ritchie and Mrs Arthur Luthmer Oelwein Melvin Fredley and daughter Milwaukee Harley Fredley and daughter Mason City Mrs Henry Messerer and son Jordan Minnesota.
Bremer County Legion picnic set for Plainfield on Tuesday June 9. All ex servicemen and families invited with music provided by a community band led by Mr. Leach of Waverly. Events include various sports and a baseball game. Basket dinner at noon with coffee and cream supplied.
Nashua strengthened its Cedar Valley lead by beating Tripoli 5 to 2 on Nashua’s lot. Errors and untimely hits doomed the Tigers as Nashua won its third straight game, with bases on balls to Pin, Rourke, Sommers, Luhring and Canty, and 2 base hits. Time 2 30. Next Sunday Tripoli visits Waverly, then home games against Readlyn June 14 and Clarksville June 21.
Mrs Carrie Brees, 77, formerly of this city, died suddenly at her farm in Dixon Missouri overnight. She had planned a summer on the Missouri farm and a California winter visit with her son Arthur Brees and family. A skilled dressmaker, she was well known locally for her sewing and tailoring.
Wm Pavelic writes from Water ville Minnesota that he is now located there in the fish business and licensed to sell bullheads in Iowa. He reports good fishing and can fill orders for any amount. He invites Tripoli residents to visit Mink farm near Waterville for service.
Otto Drewis Ernest Drewis Leo Panzer and August Staack returned from a weekend fishing trip to Albert Lea Minnesota with 354 bull heads. They left Saturday night and came back Sunday evening with a fine basket of bullheads averaging a good size.

Independent school district of Tripoli held a 40 000 bond vote with 238 in favor and 233 against amid 475 total ballots. The site debate backed the old location 344 to 125, but legal thresholds under a new law required roughly 280 favorable votes of 466 to pass.
Iowa farmers via county marketing associations have consigned 750000 pounds of wool to the Iowa Sheep and Wool Growers Association and received 90000 dollars in advances from the federal farm board. The program links with the National Wool Marketing Corporation, with shipments to Boston and grading at the Rumbaugh warehouse. Officials predict three to four million pounds in total volume.
Mrs Martha Uhlmann 81 died Monday at Cedar Falls home for aged people. Funeral services Thursday at 2:00 PM at St Pauls Evangelical church in Denver with Rev Krueger officiating. Burial in Evangelical cemetery north of Denver beside her husband the late Rev Uhlmann, former pastor of the Denver church. Neighbors recall she was well known to local residents.
Edwin J. Koch pastor of the Evangelical Church of Peace in Marshalltown was chosen leader of the Marshalltown Ministerial Alliance at a Monday meeting at the YMCA. He succeeds Rev. William K. Williams who has left the city. Koch is the son of Mr and Mrs Carl Koch of Marshalltown.
Mrs W R Phelps and her sons Keith and Owen from Littleport visited her sister Mrs Art Towne and family early last week. Her husband and daughter Jean joined Thursday and accompanied them home.
Weekend motorists traced a paved route from Tripoli through Oelwein Strawberry Point Elkader to McGregor and back by a different path. Prairie du Chien officials approve bridge funding and a new Mississippi span below McGregor, while Wisconsin beer and fishing lure visitors. The old Wisconsin River bridge near its mouth has been replaced by a modern structure drawing crowds.
Plainfield Iowa Homer A Poe formerly living two miles north of Plainfield was attacked by a bull at Roach stock yards while attempting to move it to his home. He was knocked down and trampled and severely cut and bruised. Officer Lee Murphy fired to distract the animal. Poe and others aided his escape. the bull had been recently purchased.
Miss Ione Haag faces a return to Sumner after a reckless driving charge linked to a crash that injured two companions. Judge George J. Sager ordered her to stay in Sumner or face a 30 day jail term.
Memorial day exercises drew large crowds in Tripoli with an afternoon program at the opera house followed by services at Fremont cemetery. Waterloo attorney George Pike spoke on preparedness. The Bockhaus Bartels post American Legion and local Auxiliary organized the program. John J. Chadwick, commander of O’Brien post G A R and Civil War veteran, attended and remains active and valued in the community.
Mr and Mrs Fred Dohrman sr with Mr and Mrs Otto Westendorf of Oran travel Sunday to the home of Mr and Mrs Will Dohrman near Crane Creek for a birthday celebration honoring the hostess and marking a family gathering.
Chestnut and Oscar Nolte wed at Readlyn Lutheran parsonage on Sunday May 24. Miss Lavera Nolte and Oran Chestnut attended. Bride daughter of Josh and unnamed Chestnut near town. teacher in Bremer county schools. Groom son of John Nolte of Franklin township, now a farmer. They will live on a Buck Creek farm. Kepler to Hear Cases Next Monday June 1 in district court with Roberts v Roberts alimony bid of 18000 and a Central States Power & Light vs Municipal Utilities Corp et al case in Sumner.
Remains of Mrs. Clarence Arrell, formerly of this city, were brought from Denver, Colorado, for burial in Harlington cemetery. Services were held at Kaiser chapel Sunday at 1 30 p m conducted by Rev Sharpley of the Episcopal church. Mrs Tyrrell is sister in law of Charley Tyrrell of this city. She is survived by her son Jerry who accompanied the body.
Werner Milius escaped serious injury after his motorcycle was struck by a car in the city last Friday evening. He was thrown several feet, found unconscious, and rushed to Mercy hospital with a broken collar bone and facial cuts. he recovered sufficiently to be released.
Friends in Waverly report the death of W H Hollenbeck aged 71 at his Fresno home due to a sudden heart attack. He was formerly a resident here and his father long operated a wagon and carriage factory on the site later used by Coddington & Laird.
Waverly trails Waterloo with seven graduates while Iowa University reports six graduates from Waverly. Names listed include William Becker Roy Huck Walter Seegers John Sharpley and Catherine Sulli van for arts and science degrees with Carl Hagemann earning a juris doctor.
August Roever age 53 died at his home on Thursday morning after a two year illness from pernicious anemia. He is survived by his widow a daughter Gertrude and a step daughter Nora. Funeral services were held at St Pauls Lutheran church on Sunday afternoon with Rev Albert Weltner officiating.
Olga Henkel and Cecil Morgan wed at St Pauls Lutheran Church and plan to live here after a short trip. Louise Meyer and William Liebau also married at the Lutheran parsonage and will reside locally where Liebau runs a west Bremer barber shop. A scout round-up at the fair grounds June 2 features contests and many troops. Howard Robbing and wife welcome a baby girl at Mercy hospital. Townsend anniversary celebration brings guests to the Sam Norman place. W H Wehrmacher couple visit Lansing, Iowa after a social evening with friends.
