Plans Completed For Memorial Day Program Monday

Tripe's veterans groups completed plans for the annual Memorial Day program at Town hall at 10 30 am next Monday. Main speaker will be Bernard R Balch Water loo attorney. Graveside services will be at Grace Lutheran church cemetery with opening ceremony and invocation by LaV Platte commander of The danerian Legion post, then pastor Lester E. Gatch.

Memorial Day Parade Route and Participation Notice

The annual Memorial day parade will start from the V.F.W. Home and proceed along Main street to the Town hall. V.F.W. and American Legion members march in uniform, and non members are invited to participate. Marchers assemble at the V.F.W. home at 10 a.m. on May 30.

Memorial Day Observance at Congregational Church and Cemetery

Memorial services include readings of General Logan Order No 11 and Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. Tripoli concert band, vocal selections and speaker Robert Hankner of VFW. Silent prayer, National Anthem, and benediction precede burial at Lutheran cemetery with Boy Scouts decorating graves and a VFW firing squad salute.

Teen-Age Driving Club Holds First Meeting Friday

The Tripoli Teen-Age Driving club will hold its first meeting at Town hall Friday night at 7 45 p m Gordon R Doc Spears of the Iowa Department of Public Safety will be the main speaker Local guests are invited and the general public is urged to attend with teenagers especially encouraged to come.

Marlene Winzenburg and James Vaughn Wed in Frederika

Marlene Winzenburg of Waterloo and James Vaughn of Waterloo married Sunday at St. John Lutheran church in Frederika with Rev. A A Krause officiating. Janice Springer served as maid of honor and a group of bridesmaids and groomsmen participated. The couple will reside on a farm near Waverly. Mrs. Vaughn works for Bath Packing Co. and Mr. Vaughn is employed at John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo.

Funeral Held May 9 for Louis A Panzer Blind Harness Maker

Funeral services were held in Bridgeport Connecticut on May 9 for Louis A Panzer 72 a former Tripoli resident who for 35 years supervised harness manufacture for Ringling Brothers Barnum Bailey circus He died May 6 at his home in Bridgeport He was known as the blind harness maker who worked from 1922 to 1938 without sight His death followed a sudden loss of vision caused by an injury in youth He is survived by his wife Theresa Lombard Panzer two daughters a grandson and a sister

Congregational Church Farm Planting by Fourteen Members

Fourteen farmer members of the Congregational church began soil preparation and corn planting on the church farm leased from Kenneth Chapin for three years. Thirty six seniors graduate in Tripoli High School commencement held in the school auditorium. Bantam Co Tour Draws Tripoli Commercial Club Members

Approximately 40 Tripoli Commercial Club members attended a Tuesday tour of the Schield Bantam Co of Waverly. They heard short talks by Wilbur and Vern Schield and E N Neal, reviewed the firm’s 11 year history, recalled a 40 ton limestone sale to a local farmer, and noted the initial recognition for their patented digger in a Farmers Produce Co basement dig.

First Race Program Of Season Sunday At Independence

The Iowa Thoroughbred Horse Racing association sponsors a five race program at Independence Fairgrounds starting at 2 p m Sunday. If rain occurs the races will be postponed to May 30. Duane's Accordion Band provides entertainment and Walter Sommer of Tripoli serves as association secretary.

Last Rites Saturday For Mrs Carolyn Wolf Artesian

Funeral services for Mrs Carolyn Wolf 89 were held Saturday at Kaiser Funeral Home Waverly and St Pauls Lutheran Artesian following her death the prior Wednesday at her Waverly home. Born January 5 1866 in Germany she was daughter of Carl and Sophie Spier. She married Fred Wolf April 15 1888 and they farmed in Warren Township before moving to Waverly in 1922. He died November 15 1930. Survived by son Herman Charles City five daughters Bertha Michael Hilda Clausing Alma Roettjer and Emma all of Waverly Ella Strottmann Readlyn 19 grandchildren 35 great grandchildren a brother Carl Spier and sister Louisa Koller in Germany.

Tripoli Businesses and Post Office To Close Memorial Day

Tripoli business houses and the post office will be closed all day next Monday May 30 in observance of Memorial Day. The closing follows the Commercial club schedule with no window service rural delivery or star route service that day, according to Postmaster Ray Fink.

Tripoli Band Announces Summer Concerts Begin Next Tuesday

Tripoli Concert Band will hold its first summer concert next Tuesday evening May 31 in the park under Director Harold Frese. Regular Tuesday performances continue through summer. rehearsals start Monday June 6 at 8 p m. Free lessons for high and grade school students will be offered during vacation with supervision for beginners. Parents should contact Frese at the schoolhouse Tuesday afternoons.

Readlyn man Roy Thurm dies at 41

Roy Thurm of Readlyn died unexpectedly Wednesday morning at his home from a cerebral hemorrhage. Funeral services are pending. He leaves his wife, four daughters Lois Ruth Jean Doris, two sons Lavern and Roger, his parents Mr and Mrs John Thurm, a brother Erwin Sumner and a sister Esther Paul Wolfgram Waterloo. He was preceded in death by son Delbert killed in an auto accident last August.

Seven Entries Weigh In For Dairy Diet Test

Seven entrants weighed in at the Tripoli Creamery for the Annual Dairy Diet contest sponsored by the June Dairy Month committee. No reports from other weigh-in points. local turnout suggests a larger entry list than last year. First prizes of $25 gift certificates go to the top man and top woman by June 20. county winners advance to a state contest with $75 gift certificates. Denver Centennial Plans Revealed for June 10 11

Denver marks its centennial with two days of events sponsored by the Commercial club. The program includes kiddy and pet parades, a fiction character parade, free rides for children, a midget baseball game, fireworks, a Dairy Queen crowning, dances, and multiple prize contests totaling several hundred dollars. Merriam Midway Shows will operate throughout the celebration.

Friends Plant Crops for John LaRue in Hospital

Neighbors helped on the LaRue farm to plant corn and soybeans for John LaRue who is hospitalized at St. Joseph's hospital New Hampton with heart trouble. Workers included Roy Volker Ralph Drewis Don Zipsie Albert Meyer Harold Earl and Cecil O Connell Rudy Schellhorn and John LaRue Jr of Waterloo. Ladies provided dinner and afternoon lunch.

Two Week Dry Spell Ends With Monday Downpour

Tripoli ends a two week dry spell as a Monday night rain brings a brief downpour driven by high winds. A total of .98 inch was recorded after 6 pm along with .05 inch prior, easing heat and humidity while boosting spring farming needs. Temperature dropped from the 80s to the mid 50s after the storm, with week highs near 88 and lows around 45.

Poppy Day Sale Planned in Frederika and Tripoli

American Legion auxiliary plans Poppy Day on Saturday May 28 in Tripoli and Frederika. Volunteers will canvass downtown and house to house. Poppies, made by disabled veterans at VA hospitals, fund welfare for living veterans and needy children of veterans. Frederika sales run by children under Leigh Alcock.

Herta Henke Weds Otto Gielau in Waterloo Lutheran Ceremony

In Waterloo First Lutheran church on Saturday Herta Henke of Waterloo married Otto Gielau of Denver in a German ceremony led by Rev. Bruno Schlachtenhausen. Attendants included sisters, a brother, and nurses from St. Francis hospital. The couple plans a Chicago honeymoon and will reside in Denver after a Riveria ballroom reception.
